To all our Northern friends!

Thanks, just getting some burgers ready for the BBQ, looks like more thunderstorms though! Hopefully it will be good in Ottawa they hold a big soirée (pronounced swa-rey) every year with entertainment, from afternoon till evening fireworks.

I plan to sit on the lawnchair and watch the chickens - if mosquitoes permit!

Thank you so much, your words are comforting. It’s very hard to wait for the vet, now I am on the fence about waiting, as her one eye is pretty well mostly swollen shut this morning, and I’m blaming myself. Not sure how to get pain killers into Hazel without stressing her, but I also think that she’s hopefully going to get medicated tomorrow with the vets advice, so why not start one day early.

Yep start the antibiotics. If you can calmly wrap her in a towel and pop 1/2 an aspirin into her she should be fine.

It’s only for a few seconds, sure they squawk but it’s more in protest. I lay mine on my lap on their side a bit, and pop a pill into them.

I’ll see if I can video what I do. Marty is looking a bit miserable with her moult I was toying with giving her aspirin to feel better. And she fights like a demon!

@ChicoryBlue - Having just gone through this. @Ponypoor ‘s method is 100% the best way to do it as it ensures they get all of it at once.

As an alternative with Rue being in so much pain and me afraid I would do more harm than good, here is an alternative. You can crush aspirin (low-dose 81mg) then mix it into warm water. The ratio is 1/4 aspirin to 1 gallon of water for a tiny chick or 1/2 for a grown chicken. This way they get a little as drink throughout the day. This method isn’t as effective as Ponypoor’s but it can help while you wait for the vet.

And I think also if you’re not used to handling them when they thrash about, it can be upsetting.

With my gang I have some who take it in stride and others like Marty who fight, but they all stop the moment I put them down, glare at me, shake their feathers and then eat the mealworms I give as a treat. They don’t run off in a panic - so they aren’t that stressed out!

Next to impossible to get a silkie hen here, and no less than $100 was the last one I saw posted. Not that I want any more.
Yes finding a point of lay pullet or a actual laying silkie hen in my area has been a nightmare. You all know my struggles the past 3 years. My farrier found Chiquita for me and I had to negotiate in order to not take the 2 roosters that were listed with her. I lucked out with Poppet. I was actually scrolling through facebook when the post was listed and I was the first to comment and claim her. There were 4 listed and 3 were obviously cockerels and they were not 100 sure on Poppet. I was confident from the pictures on the shape of her crest and tail feathers to take a chance. Then she waited until 11 1/2 months old to lay that first egg and had me questioning everything I thought I had learned on silkies. Her 6 daughters, I won the lottery with that hatch, still cannot believe it happened with my luck on roosters. My 4 keepers from this latest hatch, still to early to begin guessing. They are in the midst of another growth spurt and molt since they have been outside. Any pullets I am keeping. One will have to crow at me to make me list them. If any of my girls chooses to go broody after the first of September I will allow them to sit. I would hang onto all the chicks until January or February. Maybe next spring I will finally be able to start offering up pullets.

Now you are just torturing us.
Pictures?????????
Chicks were still slightly damp when going out to Cardhu. Seeing as outside temps were not quite 60⁰F, I wasn't going to let them linger for a photo shoot. 5 and 6 were still sopping from the egg, 6 looks to be trailing umbilical (I think)....and lots more pips.

Currently at work. Will see how Cardhu is doing when I get home. If she's off the nest with the 4, then photo shoot and no more babies for her. If she's still on the nest, then...if babies pop out, photo shoot....and more from the incubator going to her tonight.

Depending upon how many hatch over the course of the day, PITA may start getting some tonight, too. Surprisingly, she didn't object when Cardhu started to climb in with her after going for me with 3 & 4.

Don't worry, there will be a flood of baby pics once they're fully floofed out. I'm on vacation starting tonight through Sunday.

Do you have enough broodies to foist the babies onto?

I am actually shocked no one else here has been ‘you know what’. I keep expecting Holly to, but so far she hasn’t. Might be thinking on it though.

It’s way too hot and humid here to be bro… errrr, ‘you know what’.
