I’ve read people complaining about the “non-stop peeping” (not even the calls for help) and that’s why they don’t like brooding in their house. They’re nuts!I stood/sat out there filming for the whole half hour. The twittering/purring of mama and babies is soothing...even the "Mama, HEEEEEELLLLLLPPPPPPPP!" Even if my sister wasn't visiting, this would be a great vacation.
The other soothing thing is watching/listening to hummingbirds. Both activities have enough action to be engaging while steady enough sounds to be calming. And being ignored by all the birds helps remind the world doesn't feature me (or any other human) in the center of it.
Excellent idea.According to PoultryDVM (not necessarily the most scientifically rigorous source) the dose of aspirin for chickens is 5mg/kg given three times a day. So an individual dose of 15mg is probably right giving a total daily does of 45mg.
So yes, she got too much. Not quite double the correct (per PoultryDVM) dose.
However, she will likely be fine.
I found two relevant studies.
- One gave 10mg/kg every day for many days and monitored blood for adverse signs. They started seeing adverse (not fatal) signs on day 3. You only gave it once.
- Another study was looking at aspirin as a feed additive. It is a badly written paper which claims they gave 100mg/kg of aspirin (along with vitamin C) but it may be that they gave 100mg/chicken. Either way it is more than you gave her and their results concluded that all that aspirin boosted growth (it was a broiler study).
So, I think she will be fine. But if you are fretting you could try giving her some activated charcoal which is the treatment for aspirin overdose.
I am glad you prompted me to look it up because in my head I assumed a whole baby aspirin was the right dose!

Omg. I've been worrying about this.Actually I found him today. Down the alley, and he was a bit torn up
She's my broody splash Leghorn (white sapphire)! The SMALLEST of the 3. Focus is a barred rock and Cardhu is a partridge rock mix (Pear with Whiskey).Wow! Babies galore! 12 - so a manageable amt for her. Should be interesting to see if they stick together or brood at separate locations.
Hattie is older....6 or 7, I think...Hattie may just be staying outta LF's way. Our youngest birds won't go near a treat if one of the older birds are eating out of our hand.
I have to keep moving the hose or it starts to carve a channel....that's too deep for the chicks. As it was, the "current" in that video was fast enough that chicks didn't cross as they would have been swept along. The tire waterers are too deep for them, too. I've got the nipple bucket nest to the coop and will be keeping one of the hoses moving around so there's a steady supply between babies and the not safe water sources. Mamas will educate when they are ready to...thankfully.What I thought was cute... how one of the black chicks helped itself to a drink of wild water w/ no assistance. Chicks really are ready to be self-sufficient right off the hatch![]()

They aren’t listening closely enough. It’s not a monotone of peeps, it’s a beautiful sonic landscape.
I wrote her comment without thinking of this consequence. Just edited it. Or better to delete it?I have to refute this immediately. I don't care that the vet is wrong but people on this thread may not order from them because of the misinformation and that is unfair.
This is slander to My Pet Chicken. (See screen shot below) They even offer papers for the chickens you purchase there.
