I never heard fireflies were an issue for chickens.
Sadly there seem to be fewer and fewer each year.

That's interesting. We seem to get more fireflies each year. At least to my eyes. Back in 2002 we had such a heat wave / drought I think they were nearly wiped out. They have been on the comeback ever since. I swear it was 2005/06 before we even saw another one. Now the yard is full of them.

I saved one that fell in the pool just yesterday.

An Incident

Something just happened in the big run. Phyllistines came running out the left door and Sydney and Aster out the right. Lady Featherington must be in there.

They seem to come in spits and spirts here - one year lots of them, another year hardly any. I have not been outside in the middle of the night so far this summer to wander the paddocks like I used to do, the mosquitoes are too ferocious this year!

But maybe I'll do a walk-about tonight and check out things.

I also feel that my light over the barn may be causing issues - I will be unplugging it tonight, I don't need it, it's remains light so early and so late I don't needs lights.

The article I read states light pollution affects their breeding habits.

Good morning Bob, and everyone.

Calling for another heat alert here, the past 2 days have been really nice for the animals. It looks like this will be a hot steamy summer here.

Daisy's mum is coming to visit at 10 this morning, I'll give then a couple dozen eggs also (will dig out all of Daisy's eggs for them); I hope they are happy with how she is getting on here.

An Incident

The Phyllistines must have failed today's coop inspection.

Last night found Cardhu and PITA snuggled together in Cardhu's chosen sleeping on the ground corner (a favorite nest site). Focus was out near the feeder. Adult head count: 31, as it should be. Baby head count: not braving mamas' wrath to find out!

Okay so internet says wry neck. I got the selenium orange goo and gave each girl a tiny bit. The other chickens have been spending time with them, just now it was Delft who did not want to go to bed, she wanted to stay.
