My impression so far with silkies is that they are absolutely adorable. But, I am gonna say it, their situational awareness is questionable at best and I don’t think it’s all due to their head poofs. They can snag a larvae thrown in their general direction in half a millisecond. All that to say I am unsure it will change with the Silkies but I am fine with it, I like chicken sitting and I am happy to have them in my flock.

In fact, I am getting some more. I reordered from Meyers as they finally had some availability again. 3 Cuckoo Silkies and 3 Bantam Calico Cochin Pullets. This time I am making the drive. Pray for me I have to go in their retail store 😱 this can’t be safe at all. 🤣 Juniper looking like she agrees this could be dangerous.

This will leave me with great foundation group of 6 SFH’s once I finally find a home for Fennel and 8 little Bantams. Assuming, I make it out of Meyers with only what I ordered. Caper and Parsley judging my decision to get more mini chickens.

Whatever you wear into their store, do not wear it out to your chickens. Change your clothes and take a shower before you go out to your chickens. Who knows what has come through that store!

Good morning all

Missy says hello also on this steamy hot summer morn.

Hi :frowMiss Cheshire!

This batch of chicks is a lot slower to free range than the last. Really timid. They come out just outside the gate, then one gets spooked and they all hightail it back to the run. It’s hilarious. Curiosity the cockerel and Angel, our small white Ameraucana, have been the only two so far to venture further out towards the deck.

Our last groups figured out quickly how to use the lawn chairs to hop the fence in and out, which saved us from having to open/close the gate. Probably won’t rely on that this time as we have one chicken with a bum leg who will most likely not ever be able to scale the fence, and I don’t want her (him?) locked in alone.

I don’t have any free ranging pics for this post, so instead here is Beaky instead.

Good advice.
I suspect the store is just a pickup point for the hatchery chicks, but the other customers may be bringing in all sorts of things from their chickens back home.

So my lavenders are really growing. But Heather is definitely still a runt. Definitely smaller and with slower feather development than the other four. But she seems to be ok otherwise. I try to make sure she gets some extra attention every day, and check her crop to make sure she is getting enough food.

Someone is truly in her "Glory". That's a bum! 🥰

If I keep him, he has some strong names behind him and his would need to be fitting. Great-Grandpa Drumstick, Grandpa Bubba and Daddy George.

A name will come to me. Rosie and Michael get zero say in this one. I've not called him anything out loud. In my mind though 2 have been floating around. Homer or Winston. I'm not set on either yet. I'm still reluctant honestly to name him. But, he deserves to be called something other then Goose's boy.
Winston strikes me as a good name for a stocky guy. You'll name him when the time is right....and it may or may not be anything under consideration. Meanwhile enjoy him. He's already a looker, and going to get even better. (So is Juice, in an entirely different way.... oooh, don't share this idea with Rosie, but as she's gone with a breakfast beverage, Coffee or Espresso or something like due to the contrast comes to mind with whimsy)

Panic

What is that? Is it a rat?’ Up with the chickens roosting! It’s beady eyes staring around.

In a panic I raced to the barn to protect my wee charges - I crept into the barn - silently raced across the floor, and shone my light on the culprit, through the chicken wire on the door.

What on earth?’

Mrs Little Chicken

She is just the size of a rat. I guess it was too warm inside the box to roost.

And no fireflies to be seen at all.
Oh @Ponypoor Don't you hate when they scare us like that!

Very sad about the fireflies. I wonder what happened?
