Mine do not eat ants. Odd. I guess someone has to teach them.
I've seen them go for flying ants. We have a species here that swarms out winged ones from time to time and the chickens love them. Oddly these weren't winged....unless she found them in the nest (entrance was torn open a bit) and nabbed those before I saw them.....

Ok everyone, I am off to do chores, need to get some hay in tomorrow if it doesn’t rain. And need to do it early! So I am heading to bed after I tuck everyone else in for the night.

Poor old Red, I pick her up and put her up on the roost with everyone. She can barely walk now. But she still scarfs back her food! She is waiting there for me, on the floor she follows everyone getting ready for bed. She’s a good old hen.

It’s good to see you back here again. Lovely pictures!

Yes I was in a panic - I almost forgot to turn of the security! And poor mum was all startled.

Re: fireflies

I was hoping that we are just a few weeks behind you, being further north. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

It may be too dry here, it’s been humid but we really have not had much rain. The grass is crispy and I noted my cherry tree looking droopy. We didn’t get the thunderstorms they called for today, tomorrow I will drop a couple buckets of water around the tree.

This is what I have found on Fireflies, there is a a Firefly Watch site that one can participate in.

What time of day did you look for fireflies? Around here, they come out at dusk, sometimes earlier. Once it’s completely dark, they hang around for another 10-15 minutes, and then they pack it in. It’s really rare for me to see one after 10 pm.
