Tails well grown on all but the last few to hatch. Shoulder feathers are popping on the first to hatch. No rust, no red combs yet. Next week at the earliest.

Dale and I are away for a few days. My son called me, my big chickens got out and some dogs came into the yard. They killed Roo, my Welsummer, Spazzy & my Rhode Island. Only Maybelline & Penny are still alive. He said Penny was pretty beat up. Something always happens when we leave. My poor Roo and girls.

My heart breaks for you. And yes, almost all my losses have been when we are away. It’s frustrating.

Einstein has either paused laying, or she decided to move to a different tree. Will have to pay closer attention for the next few days.

Honestly, there are some really comfy nooks and crannies in these trees. All the places they find I’m like yup, better than the nesting boxes. I get it!

I am so sorry for all you have lost

It's so bloody unfair outsiders ruin your life, making it so you can't have a well deserved break.

I hope you can make these people accountable for their dogs not being kept under their control.

In general she will get compensation of ~$5/bird. They are considered livestock by the law and you only get compensated for the cost of a generic replacement chicken.

Kill someone's dog though......

Michigan has a "livestock protection law" which allows killing dogs that harass livestock, including poultry.
However, all states have their own set of rules!

Thank you Bob! They were such sweet chickens. I don't blame the dogs, I blame the owners for letting them roam. I've lost more chickens over the last 35 years to dogs, than anything else.
