Hey @rural mouse someone else has some heavy equipment in their yard 😉
Every time I see a toy dumptruck I remember the one I had as a kid, I'd leave it out in the back yard and after it rained I'd make "Mrs Grass soup" by adding grass and stirring it with a stick. Some dirt for flavor too, naturally. I want it back 🤣 those days were so simple

Hooman Waiter: What can I get you ladies?
Diane: I'll have the Grower Crumbles. All of them!
Tedi: I'll have that too! I'd like the All You Can Eat option. Keep 'em coming! Can you serve some on the ground too, please?
Hazel: I think we'll order Grower Crumbles for the table. We'll manage the ground part ourselves, thank you.

Barred Rock.

I have a friend who keeps Dumpies that like to hatch secret hedge chicks though, so I'm half expecting to end up with some of those sooner or later. They're cuckoo rather than barred.
Yes, cuckoo Dumpy, I know. Rare here... I looked for them a decade ago. People usually don't realize there's a difference between cuckoo & barred feathers.

Cuckoo pattern is irregular and/or V-shaped across each feather

Quite the possy. It’s funny though, my last flock would jump the gate and free range all day. This one waits for the gate to be opened and then mostly hides in the (wide open) run all day until around 5 pm, before they venture out. I’m sure some of it is the heat, but maybe also the cockerel keeping everyone tight during the day? Who knows. Flock dynamics are weird.
TY for those orchard/chick pics ❣️Memories of my folks' farm days🩷

The only pic I have of Pop & me in his lemon & lime tree grove c. 1950-51
