Thirsty Thursday
Happy Thursday everyone. Clean water for the littles is proving a challenge. Anything low enough for them to reach gets buried by Tassels and her energetic excavations.
They like the vertical nipple one so I am going with that for now. They don’t seem interested in the horizontal nipples. I really wish I had introduced them to horizontal nipples earlier. I know the usual story is they aren’t strong enough to use them, but @rural mouse (if I am remembering correctly) had hers using them by day 2.
I am sure mine will learn eventually. Hope it is soon.
The missing pot was re-excavated by Tassels and her crew. I am impressed how far she can fling it. Tassels it seems doesn’t approve of feed in a pot because she is trying to teach the little ones to dig. So she empties the pots onto the ground, and all I can think of is rats!

They will see the Bigs using the horizontal nipples and start trying them, no worries. You can also show them. I’ve spoiled the Bigs some by tapping it and pressing and they get a big drink. The Littles will start pecking eventually and figure it out!
I’d be more worried about rats, yes. The chicks are too small.

Pooh is going around demonstrating every horizontal nipple there is. Thank you Pooh! But the kids aren’t interested in lessons right now, they just want to run at full speed flapping their wings to see if they can achieve lift-off.
And when they do, much hilarity ensues.
Cookie and Geronimo had a mid air collision just now which caused much shrieking!

Lost Jet today.

I keep waiting to post until I am caught up, and then keep getting behind again. Finally caught up today, and before I post all ten other things I have been saving I have to start by saying that Jet, one of my “blue” laced Wyandottes died today. Her lacing was so dark it looked black. I have no idea what happened. Went out after work to check everyone and she was already stiff and cold. It has been really hot and humid, but still cooler than we have had many times. We have been keeping ice in the insulated water jugs. It had all melted but the water really wasn’t that hot. And I found her in the coop, which has four fans blowing in it. Still trying to look over cameras to see if she was acting weird. All I have found so far is when she walked into the corner where I found her, which is in a blind spot. She doesn’t have any peckmarks or any apparent injuries.

I will post more about other things later today. But needed to get this out first.

Farewell Jet. I will miss you.

I can’t find any recent photos of her as an adult. But here are some of her growing up.

Very sorry she passed, and not knowing why is so common but no less heartbreaking. :hugs:hugs

I didn't have the littles using them. MAMA did. Now, the way I taught the adults to use the horizontal one was by putting a dab of peanut butter on them and sticking scratch in it. They pecked the scratch, and hit the button at the same time. Water came out and they caught on the same day.

Yes their hen looks eggsactly like her, and she’s a really sweetie like Gucci ♥️

Don’t know which eggs are which as they have all their hens and two Roos running together.

I had hoped for a few Hmong eggs but their Hmong aren’t laying at the moment. So the three Polish eggs and the 3 ‘other’ eggs…. Any guesses?
I’m hoping that the H is silent in Hmong. It’s difficult to say and I get out of breath trying to say it!

Yes of course. Mama taught them. All my adults use horizontal nipples. I trained one chicken about five years ago. She is long gone but the knowledge lives on. I am confident they will pick it up, I just wish I had shown them from day one and I might not be dealing with drippy vertical nipples now.
They learned the vertical ones in a few seconds on day one.
