Making sure Isabel had food for the night I kept the Spuds in the main run with goodies and tempted the Nomads outside with the chick feeder top off and hand feeding. Sorry I didn’t get any pictures of long necks down into the feeder! I found Isabel will eat some, but she wasn’t that hungry. I didn’t feel her crop but will try today, also trying this earlier in the evening.

Maybe I’ve been overly worried about her eating?

Mornings, the Nomads appear to have unbothered access to the main run for a good while, because the Spuds eat and drink and then leave to roam the forest rhododendrons. I checked in via the camera periodically.

First the Nomads were eating, then got up on the high perches. I couldn’t see Isabel eating specifically.

Next they were all gathered by the grit cups below the camera, then checked out the west side furniture, that’s Isabel nearest the door

I saw Isabel eating grit from the cups below the perches on the left (the green cover) and then she went for a drink. That’s her at the blue waterer. Seems to me she is taking care of herself, at least she’s able to in the mornings, even if she’s last, she has confidence she’s still with the group here.

They all gathered again on the favorite spot, I think that’s her on the left end.

Eating again, or at least gathered there (see a head poking above the red top of the waterer) and playing / chasing each other around the run and just outside.

Chick-Fil-A turned out to be a hand full all last night. I love him dearly, but I believe that he has deep psychological problems, caused by his trauma. I had no idea that birds have such deep emotions.

Sad for Chick-Fil-A, but I gave you a heart emoji for your sensitivity to his mental/emotional state

I personally prefer to purchase day olds, this way I can be (fairly) sure of getting only pullets. I have shoved them under broodies several times.

Hatching chicks mean hatching cockerels. Those are extremely difficult to re-home, are they sweet and fun - yes. But once they get older they are difficult to deal with.

We just kept the ones we hatched. I honestly can't remember how many, that was at least 35 years ago. We did it to educate our children when they were little. They had so much fun with the whole process. The incubator was Styrofoam, with a heating element. We had to turn the eggs by hand. I think I still have it up in the attic.

Turned babies out with the mamas today. It’s very hot now and I am inclined to bring them inside.
