I've been out with the chickens this morning and got some new pictures. I think we need to talk about my white silkie Calypso. I believe a name change may be in order dang it. While there is definitely no attempts at crowing yet, and Calypso is the 2nd smallest I am seeing things that cannot be ignored. They hatched May 7th to May 9th so just over 3 months old now. Still a bit young as far as silkies go to attempt crowing anyway. It's the tail and the head poof that are doing it for me. That and what I spotted today when looking up close at the comb, color changing already. Yes I let out a string of curse words after a real close look at the comb. Now, regardless, he's staying, I'll make it work somehow, but I am open to name suggestions. He's still a sweetheart and very friendly. I would almost name him "Brad" after the late white silkie "Useless Farms" had. Brad was a jerk though, I'm almost afraid to use it and Calypso turn into a jerk after his namesake. I'm still very tempted anyway. I loved Brad and his jerkiness from afar.

Prince is another name I'm toying with after "chookens" lovely sweet white boy.

So friends, who is he? Is he Brad or is he Prince? I'm also open to suggestions for this little guy.

Well I have to say he tail feathers do it for me…. Just like Jolly.

I loved Brad also, wonder if she has a new boy to take his place?

If he is a sweetie pie I would bet he will stay that way, so Brad is a good name 🥰

Bingo is another one I'm going to have to start watching. 2nd biggest of the group. Bingo is the moorehead partridge. Behavior is still all pullet. Round neat crest is all pullet. Nothing much at all for a comb, and no color change yet. The tail feathers, not so neat and round. This must be taken with a grain of salt though as last year those 6 pullets, at this age 4 out of the 6 had not so neat tail feathers that made me 2nd guess gender. Their round crest's never lied even if their tails did. The gold coloring, is it just a hair bright though? More vibrant maybe like a cockerel or am I seeing things? Time will tell and Bingo is the only one making me guess. The blue chick Bluey and the other partridge Lucky, 100% pullet.

Bingo's momma or aunt Martina. Cannot deny her gold color is also vibrant and 100% hen. I see a lot of similarities between the two.

Bingo is a pullet I would say.

But what do I know???

I love the beautiful mowed pasture for the equines ~ but where will the chickens dig & hide now :idunno?

You should have seen them running after the grasshoppers that now have no place to hide.

And the crickets! It’s hilarious seeing them with a huge cricket!

Generally don’t let them out in the paddocks though, accept for the escape artists like Tippy, Butterscotch and Laverne. Oh and Buttercup now that she’s finished moulting.

Oh Lord help us all.
I have released the Kraken!
And I did not expect that the first peck to land was Chippy jumping up to peck Pooh’s comb! Poor Pooh she was taken aback to say the least.

So now that the chicks are a bit older, how has Pooh been with them? Or is she oblivious to them?

Name one Hannah. Or Hennah, I won’t mind.

I like Hennah - for the one little lady here. There are two that are dark with red head feathers, which is how I am telling 2 of them apart the other 2 are twins! But the ones with the red are different enough I can tell them apart.

The one with the most red I have been calling Red - ya I know, original…. The other can be Hennah - have a Henny so need to be careful I am not mixing name to much haha!

If I have one more broody I will scream.
So for Tuesday - these two have not laid an egg since Spring. And they are moulting, Curly and Fluffy McNugget.

Don’t think they are sweet and cute - they are vicious little velociraptors! And rule the roost here. Esp Fluffy!
For all their meanness Silkies are still easier bullies than the standard breeds we've had. Hens seem to be obnoxious when broody or moulting here. Sweeties all other times.

Only competition for food bothers Ginny now that she's finally past her really mean moods.

Hatch day is nearing.

I did one last candle of the eggs tonight, still some room to move somewhat for the wee kiddies, but it’s getting tight in those eggs.

I will let Whiskers off the nest one more time tomorrow night, then she will be on lock down. Silkies generally hatch day 19, and these eggs will likely also hatch then.

Today is day 17, so Thursday night is the time to watch and see if any will hatch then. It’s the long weekend coming up and I couldn’t have planned it any better to be home.

Am I eggcited? Of course, but also dreading what is to come with the cockerels. I am hoping my neighbour will take all the chicks back (minus the one that may be a Polish Pullet), they have their chooks listed for sale all the time so their place is known. The chicks can stay here until Whiskers weans them then hoping they can get new homes.

Meanwhile the Noirans are still up in the air, I may sell them as a group when they get older, I will see how they mature.

One rooster is gone - the big statue of the white Roo is gone! But I am sure it’s because there is construction going on there - Enbridge is running a pipeline through there so Mr Roo had to be moved. I would have happily housed him here for a while 😉

Mr Roo, where are you?!

Pooh seems to like them a lot.
She goes in with them very early in the morning and lays her egg. She hangs out with them.
Calypso continues to be terrified of them.
Hard to tell about Piglet and Sylvie. Piglet only just stopped being broody and Sylvie is still stubbornly sitting on nothing.
Here is Geronimo who is getting some interesting feather patterns. Also she has quite feathered feet.
She is hard to get in focus as she is always in a hurry!
