The two were my two game hens, not quite ready for laying just yet. I’d hate to have lost those two.
Chickens that fly exceptionally well is one of the reasons we chose Silkies ~ they don't fly well. Game birds have a wanderlust ~ being a lot less domestic minded they may wander again. They did originally leave their yard to choose your nice setup after all, didn't they 😄 Smart birds❣️

Even the local Walmart has ordered extra pallets of salt free canned corn. Because I do buy so much of it for the kiddos! And everything I do seems chicken related. :he
Welcome to the chickeneering club ! Everything we do is planned around those birds ❣️ Even the remodel of our cottage & the yards!

Today is Monday (Dakota on a Monday) her nickname is Dakotamunday!) tomorrow it might be Dakota on a Tuesday! . She doesn’t care what this old fool calls her, as long as there are treats waiting for her.
Ps: my chooks eat better than I do usually.View attachment 4213318
How did you choose that name for her?

Was it @drstratton asked us to post our chicken runs?
Here's the overall view, though you can't see into the woodsy area in the back.

The covered runs, two 6.5 x 13 ft runs placed at a "T" to each other. These go into the covered Big's coop run at the far end, you can make out the ladder back there, but there’s a door to the netted outdoor area on the left just before that coop run, near the blue dust bath pool.

Going to the left of the covered runs. This area with the perch between cinder blocks the Nomad Buckeyes use a lot, and the Bigs like to lay next to the run on the damp ground between the drainage pipe and the run wall when it's hot.

Going more left and uphill is the fields-y area. There is Buff Orp Tedi in the shade just inside the back woodsy area. The wall of the netted area is 1” aviary netting and the ceiling is 2” netting.

Going more left, uphill into the woods

In the back woodsy part, looking down to the covered runs more or less. In the shadow on the left near the left-most tree are a couple Nomad Buckeyes coming up to see what I'm about.

Heading left and around. That’s excess netting gathered at the top.

Out of the wooded area looking again at the fields-y area and now the Littles' coop area, from the opposite side.

This area was unplanned as extra until I got five chicks instead of three. Used the wall netting as ceiling, lifting it to make a roof, then adding more netting to extend the ceiling and bring it down to a wall and enclose it. But all I had close to the right size was more 1" stuff which is heavy and sags a lot. Lots of improvised tripods and posts and salvaged wrecked greenhouse tubes in here to hold it and the various shade and weather tarps up.

A view from above of this side and the Littles' coop. On the very left is the Bigs,' coop which has a shade tarp on an intact greenhouse frame but is not under any netting, the run goes to under the big coop but not around it.View attachment 4213263
TY for the pics ❣️ I was the one who asked. That is a LOT of work you did! Lots of things for chickens to do & lots of hiding & entertainment areas too. I think even a grizzly would think twice before getting tangled in that safety netting!

Hawks are a predator everywhere even here in our suburbs & we've even had coyote, raccoons, & possums. Has any ground predators snooped in your area?

This is our little coop & run & the hens only use it to lay eggs or roost at night. For nighttime we really feel confident about the dog kennel wire for the walk-in door & run walls to keep city night predators out & hens secure during roost. I thought it over-kill to get such a solid built coop for a little backyard but now glad we did. Who knew we'd have wild predators in the suburbs... but then we're only a couple miles from the mtns & nat'l forest behind us!

There is a regional airport 20 min away you can land there :)

I'll have the lawnchairs ready - might want to pick up Rebecca on the way seeing as how she is just sitting around anyways 😁
Stop by Ohio and pick me up, I would love to sit a spell with her and her chickens too!

Better check crowded passenger seating or there might be some lap sitters 😄❣️

Good night all have a lovely evening.
You were before kinda thinking Sophia might be the next to go? Nevertheless, it's so sad to lose one :hugsNice idea to continue the name❣️ It means "wisdom"...

How did you choose that name for her?
I found her and her sister in my yard. Some kids threw them over the fence, but instead of my other birds killing them, my birds accepted them into the tribe. The two were named Arizona and Dakota. They were inseparable, until Arizona was poisoned and died. Then my Dakota came close to me. We have been inseparable ever since. Arizona and South Dakota are my two favorite states to visit. I also love to visit Seattle Washington state and Vancouver British Columbia. And of course Washington DC.
