I was worrying about trying to weigh the new Buckeyes, it’s not easy getting the tamest hens here to stand in one place reliably. And Shehnai, he’s soooo big even now, very tall. Maybe I’m just not used to looking at a rooster! But he might push the upper limit on Buckeyes when he’s fully grown. Or be a regular Buckeye roo. In any case I don’t think his natural stance will even fit on my kitchen scale!

I’m going to get the setup you and now @RoyalChick have. What size bags are you using? Would I use his height as a gauge to estimate the size I need? I have two or three cloth bags but they vary.

What’s the brand of hanging scale you all have?

I once shoved Sir Shirley in one of the shopping bags 😆 he barely fit! At 10lbs he was a big boy. Thankfully he was also very quiet and took it all in stride.

When I get home I’ll take a pic of the bag for you to judge by.

I have two brands of luggage scales both are good and have imperial and metric weight measurements.

This is the scale I got.

In terms of bags I pulled out all the grocery bags and picked one that looked like it might work. The best one turned out to be not a real grocery bag but something I nearly threw out! Some of the grocery bags make a noise when moved around and although one of those looked the best size I thought it might be scary.
I will use a smaller bag for the chicks probably - though Mr.Chips has put on a growth spurt and is now scary tall!

What a beauty!

How old are they now?

7 weeks + 1 day.
My crew are 12 weeks tomorrow, and all but Arabel are completely into the honk phase. Arabel has a peep-honk going, but I think the peep part will be gone by Friday.

Mr. Chip is looking oh so fine. One of the flocks I occasionally see ranging on my route to/from work has some roos that I suspect are speckled sussex. The roos (at distance) look dark ish red with 1-2 white tai feathers, 1 of which is a flag feather. The hens are a mixed assortment. The guys have the white in the tail that just illuminates in the sunshine.

Set this up for her yesterday. Good luck Delft.

Looks like these pictures worked. Maybe it was a cache clearing thing...
Can you explain your setup to me and why? Why lockdown? What’s the empty half? Why are the eggs behind the little door (or are there eggs under Delft, too?)? I’m kind of confused. But she looks all cute and snuggly in there!

I’ve not had a broody hen yet. Just wondering.

Hmmmm I can’t remember how old mine are - I think 5 weeks now? 6?

They are brats! Into everything, getting underfoot. Into the horses’ feed buckets - sheesh! I have to keep everything hidden from them or they are into it! They know, no boundaries. Even the silkie chicks are starting to run amok!

He is looking fine and is becoming less fearful of me. Wiped his beak on my shoes this morning.
It is probably still a temporary name, but he is Mr. Chips with an 's'. I keep finding myself calling him that because Goodbye Mr. Chips was one of the few phrases in English that my beloved Great Uncle knew. He must have seen the movie at some point maybe?
Anyway, like I communicate with my chickens he and I were very close without a shared language but he would say 'Goodbye Mr. Chips' and roar with laughter and that would set me off giggling as a little girl.
I don’t believe I have ever seen the film or read the book but I don’t get the sense that the goodbye is sad and Mr. Chips sounds like a fine old character, so it will do as a name for now!

I really need to write down the hatch dates of these chicks here!

That one big boy at the sale on Sunday was a gorgeous specimen - he was soooo lovely.

I really hate sales, I feel guilty for not bringing them all home 😢

I’ll never go again.
