Molting time is the only time I allow chickens to sleep in the nest boxes. Nobody's laying, so no poopy eggs anyway. I can understand wanting nobody to be near and jostle you.

Once the feathers have grown in, I close up the boxes. They understand.
 
I agree with your ideas. I thought I’d heard cooked pumpkin is something you give dogs for their gut health. The fiber may be more digestible, “just right”, when it’s cooked?

I left the pumpkin for a long time, until it got covered with run litter & dirt & started to look nasty and I worried about mold.
I give canned pumpkin puree to the cats to help with fur balls.

Spotty - I kept trying to remove the dirt on him much to his dislike! But those dirt spots just wouldn’t become clean. Put my glasses on and they are brown feathers!
He’s a boy for sure.😞
