These two (Geronimo & Mr. Chips) have been checking out nest boxes all day.
I think she has persuaded him that the upper level is best. Left or right is still under discussion!

Ooooh! Escort duties! Goooooood boy!!!!!!!!!

The best thing happened today! We FINALLY were able to get my poor chickens out into the yard. We got an electric fence set up with a decent amount of space (planning for more later, but I'll take what we can get!). It of course took much longer to set up than planned, so they only had about an hour.
We videoed them coming out. It took them a while to figure out they could roam - they at first hung out right on front of the run.
The video involves my squeaky voice, so I'll spare you. Here's a few pictures of their first foray into the wider world outside of their run.
They had no fear of Jack the dog, having seen him waiting for me outside the run all their lives. Then he stood up and everyone freaked out.
I don't know if you can see the fence in the last picture, as it was really getting dark
Warms my heart to see free-roaming chickens❣️ Joy that you also have an electric fence!

Nope nope nope not agreeing nope! It took me 3 hrs to do chores tonight, I had to shovel to the manure pile again, and try to clear snow from the house roof where it’s getting an ice dam. Hoping for some sun to warm the roof where I cleared it, help melt the ice.

Temp is steady at -9C (16F) and I see on the radar a new squall line setting up over top of my area.

My barn cams are running tonight and I see that Mr P’s group are all snuggled together, the silkie chicks are still being permitted to sleep with Whiskers, though she would prefer they not sleep with her.

Where is everyone? HH-A is almost empty!

They are packed into HH-B - but really it looks as empty there also.

I’d really like to get Mr P and his harem back in there but I worry about the wee silkies, I know Marty and Georgie would be fine, and of course The McNugget triplets. But wee Holly and the new chicks are tiny. I’ll need to think on this. It would be warmer for them all, but I don’t want anyone hurt.
Your Silkies seem to favor the cardboard box. Put up a couple more for your chicklets to discover maybe?

@featherhead007 ~ if you're a chocoholic switch out the high sugar M&M's to dark chocolate bars w/ minimum 72% cacao & eat raw nuts w/ the cacao chocolate ~ almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios, hazelnuts, brazil nuts ~ however, cashews & peanuts are not nuts, they are legumes. Some dark bars have pleasant tastes & some can be strong so I sampled a lot of brands to find the nicer tastes.

I eat the bars 1/3 of the bar or less since the dark chocolate is satisfying in less amounts especially eaten w/ favorite raw nuts.

Lindt Dark Chocolate

I avoid the dark cocao brands that add sugary caramel, sugary mint, or sugary fruit-cream fillings ~ the more sugar or fillings lowers the cacao%.

We found dark chocolate w/ cranberries ~ cranberries help kidney health.

Goodbye to a Friend

Today I said goodbye to another friend. This time in the pouring rain. The rest of the tribe watched from the open door to the complex wishing it would stop so they could come out and enjoy the yard but alas it did not.

She is buried next to Patsy. Both of Lilly's friends together. Someday Lilly will join them but hopefully not for a long time yet.

Goodbye my friend, rest in peace.

Because there was no real free ranging today, I hung out with them in the run. I can't really tell what if any changes are happening in the tribe as a result of their loss. Once i see any I will share.

Sydney did spend some in the Cluckle Hut today.

Sansa was so beautiful! I was interested to see her sitting on your feet. Apparently she would get close on her terms.

@TOMTE ~ maybe move the waterer location? or is that possible? Not sure how much space you have to relocate?

By Bob has his elevated & seems clean.

We struggled for 4 years keeping clean water ~ the chickens made a mess & sparrows also pooped in it so finally we switched to nipple waterer jugs.

We also use smaller nipple waterers as well.

I'm not sure where I could move it where it would still reach the extension cord. Might just have to add ANOTHER small board to the coop entrance as a lip to keep them from kicking out so much bedding 🤦‍♂️
