Happy Wattle Wednesday
Mr. Chips is growing his wattles. I worry about frostbite as he drags them in the water trough. He tends to sleep with his head tucked under his wing so hopefully that helps.

Yes, the head tucked helps keep comb/wattles from frostbite. Hope he keeps it up during frosty nights He really has grown into a looker!

Someone should invent a hoodie to protect chickens from the cold weather?

That's exactly why we gained interest in crested, bearded, small rose-comb, or no-comb breeds ~ to avoid frostbite issues... we considered/researched breeds like Polish, Sultan, Silkie, Breda, Ameraucana, Easter Egger, Faverolles, Russian Orloff, Dominique, Araucana, Pavlovskaya, Chantecler, etc etc.

The roos in many combed breeds grow such enormous wattles/combs but that was never an issue to confront since we can't/aren't zoned for having roo's anyway.

The hens we were happiest with are Silkies & Dominiques w/ Bredas & Ameraucanas as nice choices for our area.

Linoleum is a good replacement for carpet, or expensive wood flooring. FYI

Since DH chose Chickens as our one pet choice, we remodeled the cottage w/ ceramic tile floors so no worries when they come inside

It’s all the expensive meds I am prescribed for. Doctors prescribed meds. The pharmaceutical companies want patients. My doctors just prescribe new medications. Hard to find an honest doctor in Central Valley, they are all subsidized by large pharmaceutical. $$$$ money talks patients suffering from it!

I don't fill most of my prescriptions for that very reason... & Drs can't figure how I'm doing so well w/o them... the secret? I'm not suffering the med side effects ! Have you ever read the miserable med pkg disclaimers?! They give me more pain then any ailments I have! Certain antibiotics are ok for me & some prescribed Motrin only occasionally & that's about it.

I got chilly just watching the bluster! Reminds me too much of our vicious Santa Ana winds here!

I guess Blue hens are always going to be my favourite color & yours are beautiful. I like Colombian coloring too like the Brahmas have.

I was able to get new chicken photos yesterday.
Parmesan is definitely molting.

Mozzarellas feathers are definity growing back but dry face, wattles and comb is getting to her. I don't think she cares but it is quite visible. Is there some sort of lotion I can use on her or something homemade or is this something she has to deal with until the weather gets warmer?

Speaking of weather, today wasn't as cold as the previous days and I'm sure that tomorrow will be the same. If not, a little warmer. I think Mozzarella finds it enjoyable and the Pentatonix will spend more time out of their shed.

You know, you can put Vaseline on his wattles. I know previously there was a long discussion about that making things worse....however, while I was working at the Zoo, a Zoo Keeper (who was in the service and knows someone who was part of the Human study regarding that conducted in Mass), states that he has a close Vet. friend who also did a study (not sure if it is published) - that concluded it DOES help in chickens on combs/wattles because they don't 'sweat/perspire' through their skin like we do. So, wattles/combs should be DRY when applied - so moisture doesn't get trapped...but that it does provide a slight bit of protection. And, in the case of Mr. Chips, would provide additional protection as it would keep the moisture from settling on his wattles when he drags them through the water. dips them in the water.

We used vaseline on our White Leghorn hen & the only negative is that it's messy & stuck to her white feathers & then dirt stuck to the feathers when she dustbathed & stained her white to dirt stains that never came off till next moult. So w/ vet's ok we switched to using the vitamin E oil which worked beneficially to soak into the comb/wattle/face skin & didn't stain the feathers.

From Walmart we'd get this vit E/coconut oil blend ~ we don't need it now that we have no comb or wattle Silkies. This 12,000 IU is safer than the 24,000 IU bottle cuz the 24,000 has irritating lemon in it.

I have used a small bit of mineral oil on dry flaky combs, should be fine on wattles also. Don’t use too much just a
couple of drops in your hand, I it a couple drops in my hand the rub my hands together and then massage onto the dry comb. You can do the same with the wattles.
