Not quite. They're black breasted reds, so will be color sexable by 4 weeks. (Like Mr/Mrs LC).

Been looking into it and they say day olds females different than males...?

At any rate they are my top pick for him, and I have been looking at the Barred Rock - I really like mine.

Here is the list I have:

Welsummer (auto-sexing good layers)
Barred Rock (good layers, long lived good temperament, autosexing)
Dominique (rose comb, sweet calm gentle, lots of eggs, autosexing, very hardy)
Cream Legbar (lots of eggs, auto sexing)
Bielefelder (quiet, calm, good egg laying, autosexing)

Leaning more towards the Dominque than the BR, because of the rose comb. These are all larger birds too so shouldn't have any issues.

A second egg! Laid in the same spot so it froze again. 😆

Such a cute lil eggy!
Also
Delft has resumed laying, Red is laying, and I believe Gertrude is laying too? Or one of the cochins is laying now. Dream seems to be getting close.
Diva went SHOOTING into the coop when I went to lock up last night. Guess she's declared herself a run bird permanently. 🙄

Barred Rocks are great. And snuggly too!

Vaccinating chicks just isn't a thing here it seems. Not sure why but unless it's a big factory farm seems that vaccinating isn't done. Which really irritates me, I am now wondering if I can vax them when I get them - another rabbit hole I will no doubt fall down later on.
Cost/availability is the issue, I think - some (/most/all?) vaccines are only available in larger quantities and buying hundreds of doses of something just to vaccinate a dozen chickens will be prohibitively expensive in most cases. Plus vaccines often don't keep for long once they've been opened, and sometimes need to be used within a very narrow timeframe in relation to the age of the bird - Marek's is given at one day old iirc, so you'd potentially need to buy two amps for your dozen chicks if they hatched over a couple of days.

E.g. - I just picked a Marek's vaccine at random on the Noah compendium website and it only comes in multiples of 1000 doses and has to be used within 2 hours of being thawed and reconstituted.

Conglomerate/commercial poultry farms in USA are big business here so there's a lot of over-regulated rules... as a result, established responsible private breeders have access to certifications, vaccines, labs, & DNA sexing for their smaller enterprises. 15 yrs ago it was hard to find certified private breeders but lately it's been a lot easier.

A very small private or backyard breeder may not vax their birds or have certifications for testing cuz those cut into their meager budgets/profits. I avoid those breeders only cuz we've had sick or low-immunity birds from them in the past & that becomes bird deaths & shipping $$$ wasted down the drain.

Unvaxed birds we've lost in the past. After 2015 I refused purchasing any unvaxed birds.
