Hello, new egg here!!

All 10 chicks are happy with their new setup. Dottie seems to be growing a bit. No one is picking on her. Oh, and now that my across-the-street neighbor knows that I have chickens inside my house, she invited me on a tour of her coops and sent me home with 7 eggs! Not a bad deal; my chicks are only 3 1/2 weeks old and already I am getting eggs.:thumbsup:celebrate:celebrate

Pycoppe is a surname from Lancashire, England. Meaning: "hill with a peak or sharp point". Alternate spellings: Piccop, Picopp, Peacop, Pickhup, and Pickup. I will apologize to anyone who has this surname; I mean no offense.

Way back when I was 21, working with 18 other young women at a bank filing the canceled checks, we would sometimes call out the interesting names to keep things interesting. One name that crossed my desk was Pamela Pickup. At that time I did not know the history of the name, hence the apology now.

Why am I saying this? Out of the 10 chicks in the brooder, only one has thus far earned a name and that is Dottie, the runt. But today, several times today, one large chick stepped forward and allowed me to tickle her chin, stroke her head and to pick her up...so I am naming her Pamela. Hopefully, the other 8 will earn a name soon. I never realized how difficult it is to name chickens when there are no rug rats or toddlers in the home!

I'm gonna have to learn something about leg bands to tell the chicks apart.
Is it okay to use the tiny hair elastics? Or is something more professional required?

Sorry, I do not know about the leg bands and you may get more opinions if you post on the Raising Baby Chicks Forum.

I like the reasoning behind your naming! I went with a theme, all female singers and you could go along those lines also with a theme based on something you enjoy; a book, a movie, sport etc ;)

Thank you. I like the list of girl singers you used for your chickens. My girls (if they are all girls) may end up with names that don't fit a theme but I sure like your idea.

You definitely want something that stretches at this age if you use a leg band and keep a close eye on them. Chicks grow fast and you don't want to cut off circulation. I no longer band until they are fully grown and use color coded zip ties, but when using zip ties you have to leave them loose and cut the end off really close to the lock or birds will pull on it and tighten it up cutting off circulation.

Update. I found a man who needed my 4 Production Red chicks so now I just have my original 6 Buff Orpingtons. Dottie continues to improve. She is getting fat and fluffy. She is always the first one to come running when I fill the food container. I'm happy with her progress.

Update: May 4 2018. The chicks continue to grow and Dottie is still feisty and first at the food. For a while now, 5 of the chicks have been roosting at bedtime and poor Dottie cries because she was alone. I made her a lower roost that she should be able to access but...no, still crying and not roosting. Well, last night the chicks quieted down rather quickly. I took a quick peek. Dottie managed to get herself up onto her roost all by herself. My heart melted at the sight. I am so proud of this little chick.

That is so cool, good for Dottie!
