July 2022 Hatch-A-Long

I suppose I'll just have to join in...I set 10 eng orpington eggs (ordered 6 got 10) from Papa's Poultry under my broody on the 10th, due to hatch the 2nd. I candled at day 6 and saw veins in all of them, not planning on candling again until day 17. This is mine and hers first time hatching and I'm a bit nervous with this crazy heat we've been having

For those that hatch with a broody. How often would you let them hatch eggs? I have one that was broody for around 4 weeks till eggs hatched. She mothered them about 3-3.5 weeks then started laying and roosting again. The chicks were on their own. The chicks are only 6 weeks old now and she is broody again? I have eggs coming today but is it too soon? I feel she may need time to get her body condition back up.

I have no idea as this is my first time with a broody, but it does seem like she would need more time to get back her condition. I'm sure someone else can offer some better advice

I've only hatched with a broody once...years ago, so I have no advice either. But yes, I'd imagine it would take her a while to get back into form. I suppose that's up to you, whether you're willing to risk it or not.

If she should have more I won't risk it. Not with it when I have an incubator

That's what I was thinking. If I have an incubator and don't know if she's up for it, I wouldn't try to put her thru it all again so soon. Give her some time. I think that's the most responsible thing to do as a caretaker. She's earned a rest, even if she doesn't think she needs one. Silly birds, lol.

Hey, BTW, does anyone have eggs due to hatch at the beginning of the month? I've noticed we're a little short on updates from those folks. Any candling pics? Come on, let those of us still waiting for our "googies" as I call them to live vicariously thru you in the meantime!

Mine are hatching on the 3rd. I don't know if I'm the only earlybird?

Maybe people in the US didn't want to hatch over the holiday weekend when they had plans?

Mine hatch the 5th! This is what I’m down to.
7 Legbars
6 Silverudd’s
5 Welsummer
1 backcross Olive egger.
The Legbar and Silverudd’s have 100% developed. 1 Welsummer was an early quitter. 5/6 olive eggers didn’t develop or early quit.That’s ok though. It’ll give me something to hatch for next year. Along with Leghorns and bantams.

At day 10 they’re already too dark to photograph. In person I can see some movement and veining.

I know people have great luck with their eggs! Papa’s must take great care of their flock and have their shipping method dialed in.

Wow, that's awesome @UThobbyfarmer !! I didn't remember yours being due so soon. Love the pic of all the colorful little eggies! Gonna be some fun babies.

They were all individually wrapped in bubble wrap surrounded by shredded paper, that box was sealed and placed in a bigger box full of shredded paper as well. My neighbor already had an egg order in so I piggy-backed on hers. I figured the orps would sell pretty good around here and their unique colors will make it even easier to sell them, at least that's my thinking anyway. lol
