July 2022 Hatch-A-Long

"My beautiful chicken"!!! OMG, I love it! That's so sweet. My two year old kept yelling "Ayyyys!" whenever he saw the eggs in the incubator (that's how he says eggs), and after they started hatching, whenever we'd go check on them he'd say "HI!!!" as we walked up. He still says "Hi!" every time he goes up to the brooder! I just love hatching and having chicks around the littles, they enjoy it so much and learn to appreciate and respect life as a result. All my kids have watched me hatch out birds and are very kind to animals (after a few close calls and tragedies) because they learned to cheer them on with me and respect the struggle they went thru just to come into the world. Can't think of a better lesson I'd like to teach my children than that all life is precious and should be treated as such. I just love chicks and chickens for giving my kids that valuable lesson :love
Totally agree! Even my 15 month old grandson (trying to talk but we can't make sense of much) makes it very clear thar he wants to be lifted up to sit beside the babies and pet em! My 3 yr old grandson got to help the last baby hatch!!!
Truly a miracle and an experience like no other!

hi! my chick is having some trouble standing on its own. I thought it was splay leg, but now I’m thinking it’s neurological. i have separated the chick, offering crumble (eating) and vitamins water which it is drinking fine. is there anything else I can do for this chick if it is neurological?

Hmmm, I’m not sure! Maybe a post in the emergency or chick section would get more views? Good news that it’s able to eat and drink though! Very encouraging

I'm on day 18 now! I've candled and weighed again. All 18 eggs are alive and lots are wobbling around.

I'm still worried about the huge variation in weight loss. Here's the final % for day 18. I'm hoping the couple that have lost the least will still draw down a bit more today. I'm really worried about the ones that have lost way too much. What do you all think? Is there any hope for those ones? Eggs 9 and 19 in particular have enormous air cells.

I should say there is a big variation in the size of the actual eggs. The ones that have lost a lot are mostly very large, long eggs.

Well, today is Day 18 for my Lavender Ams and Birchen Marans eggs. I put them in lockdown a day early yesterday because I had so many hatch last week when I locked down early, wanted to see if they do as well this time. I candled them, marked their air cells, and marked where they were most likely to pip. All 4 lavenders were still moving, but some of the (10)Marans were darn near impossible to see into, so I'm not sure if they were all moving or not. I'm still worried about Maran #4, but it was so dark I couldn't see if the baby was moving or not, so I left it in. Hopefully there will be no explosions- that would suck. Fingers crossed they all make it!

I am going to lock down today, after my coffee.

I checked eggs yesterday, and I saw the lid was askew. It had been like that one day, not totally, my 8 eggs all still looked fine, and the temps still said 100. Still I don't like to find it that way.
I hate that. There's been a few times that happened to me. As long as your temp and humidity was still stable, they'll probably be fine. Looks like quite a few of us are on Day 18! Gonna be babies popping out left and right in a few days!!
