The folks I got the pup from use old Roy.
Not what I would call a "decent" dog food.

Wellness and many other "top" brands had multiple recalls.

Taters! I had gone grocery shopping and a week later every tatering frozen vegetable I bought had a recall issued. We had been using them for the whole week!

It is a scary world not knowing what is really in 90% of what we eat.

Reasons to try and grow our own.

Ok not subtle this time. Lol.

BENEFUL IS CRAP!

Any dog food can have a recall, that's true.

I love dog food advisor.
They are not affiliated with any dog food company and are completely unbiased.
It is free and easy to sign up for the emailed recall alerts with them too.

The best way to give a dog a head start on a long and healthy life for growth as well as cognitive development is to feed them as well as you can afford to from the start.

Having said that, Beneful has always had an adorable ad campaign. Their commercials are so darn cute!

If only they invested a fraction of that part of their budget into actually improving their product.

Once again it's made it into the top 20 WORST dog foods for 2018. (Ol Roy is in there too.)

On pet food deaths, I lost a dog and cat to Blue Buffalo. Dog ended up with pancreas and cirrhosis of the liver. Cat ended up with inoperable intestinal tumor. Just an fyi, and I refuse to feed it ever again. We feed nutro and royal canin.

ETA - Phew, neither made it on the 20 worst list.

Really? That is terrible! What was in it? Or did you ever find out?

Oh I am not arguing "for" beneful at all.

The one bag I bag I bought is not likely to do her in.

I get frustrated trying to find a decent dog food for her. It is scary what they put in them.

I end up cooking chicken and eggs for the doggies.

I tried to look up the website for the first kind of feed I got her and the website on the bag takes me to some foreign site. It looks to be related but is in a foreign language.

I had a friend that fed blue. Dog developed pancreatitis that kept coming back every time she went back to that food which was highly recommended by her breeder and vet.
Dog eventually died of pancreatic cancer 2 years later.

We never bothered to find out, but we list both within a year of each other. It was heartbreaking, and I still cry at times even though it's been 6 yrs. We had the cat almost 20 years, and the dog was 8 mos older than my youngest. He was so family oriented that he took diapers to the trash, and when they went to school, he wasn't content until the day he saw where the bus took them. Once he saw them at school, he never fussed about admit it in the mornings again.

All I have to say about Beneful is, when I was practicing as a vet, I saw a LOT of dogs with skin problems (atopy or food allergy, I do not know) from dogs that were fed Beneful. There was no published research at the time. I don't know if it has to do with all the coloring, or preservatives, or what is in it. But at least anecdotally, I did see more allergic type responses in Beneful dogs, and other vets I talked with at the time (2007-2011ish) did too.

ETA: FWIW, dogs are color-blind, so they don't give a crap about those pretty little orange-colored, carrot-shaped carrots, or whatever he hell it is. That is purely marketing for us humans. (it's pretty! It looks like a carrot, so it must be healthier! lol) Just saying.

I would really like to feed taste of the wild. My poor old guys have never had the tummy for it though.
It made for squishy poo and due to the very high protein made them have leg pain while growing that caused them to gimp around.

I still think it is a great dog food. Heck it is number 3 on the top 20 list of good foods. I do still give it as a treat.
It is on the more expensive side for sure.

Puppy just ate and yes it was beneful. Of course she also had scrambled eggs.

I am looking into EVO.
