I do on big things like the fridge and stove but I like a little pop of color with the small things I use everyday. I just wish they had a bigger selection of colors to choose from and they didn't jack up prices based on the color. It is just plastic it should cost the same, but that wouldn't make them more money .:)
Stick with a safe color like black or stainless steel

I noticed they had box fans in assorted colors this year.

I'm doing an experiment. :)

I know the chances are slim, but the scientist in me cannot NOT do it. And, besides that--Kiki hatched balut eggs, didn't she?! And that is kind of a small miracle. So there it is.

I know it's a long shot. But you know I really miss Lafayette, my AC roo. And I've been farting around with the idea of getting another one, unbeknownst to my DH. They are not common, and I would prefer to get a rehomed one for free rather than pay a bufttload for one.

So here's what I'm going to try.

I have all these eggs saved up from the past month or so that I was pulling eggs. They have for the most part been refrigerated. Some were sitting out on the counter a week or so before they went in the fridge.

Although I have 8 breeds of chickens, I am fairly confident which are prolly the AC eggs.

I know chicken sperm can last a couple weeks in the hen, maybe more. I know eggs that have been refrigerated can be hatched. Although a month or more in the fridge, pretty unlikely.

But Lafay was a randy dude, and my AC hens were getting nailed on a pretty daily basis before he took ill. And I would LOVE to have some progeny from him (had I known he was going to die, I would have long ago hatched his chicks). So there is a good chance that there are some fertilized eggs in there.

It will make for a fun experiment, I am really not expecting much (if anything!) to happen. But--I have nothing to lose, do I? It's not like I was going to eat those eggs (oh yeah, and another factor--those hens were dewormed and Corid tx'd).

So. I already plucked out the supposed AC eggs, they are sitting on the kitchen counter for 24 hours, and then? They are going in the bator. And then, I will be having good times daily--in my dark bathroom with a flashlight--candling and sharing results (and hopefully pics!) with you guys.

What do you think? I know it's crazy, but....nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?:fl

:thumbsup

five years ago or so, an poultry expert gave a talk at a poultry show. He presented that a new cock bird would "push out" The sperm of the older cock bird. He did present the percentage of chicks from each parent and there were chicks listed up to 30 days.

Sadly many that heard the talk focused on the pushed out stuff not the fact that you will get offspring from both roos for a long time. Since it hits about 50% at two weeks, they heard that as the time to start collecting the eggs.

I have a suspicion that a lot of breeding programs were messed up by that. The breeders had offspring from roosters that they did not pick

Ron, this post is what started me thinking about doing my egg experiment....

I think you will get some chicks!

I bought SG Dorking eggs from a breeder. She had moved an Ameraucana rooster out and moved the SG Dorking rooster into the pen. She waited two weeks to start collecting eggs and one of them that I hatched was

What a beautiful accident! I was hoping that the chick Loki hatched would have been leghorn b/c Odin had been out w/ them recently, but nope, I'm sure it was one of Willie's kids... makes sense since he's always w/ the girls & Odin only had 1-2 chances to get w/ anyone. It also explains how the lady I got the chicks from ended up w a cemani/lav mix.

Here everything is that beachy Pinterest-y ladies magazine-y aqua color.
Can you tell I’m not a fan?
My next door neighbors house though (the rabbit lady) is like walking into a Barbie house a’la 1976.
Pink.
Pink.
And more pink.
But with splashes of the aforementioned aqua and ornamental seashells and inspirational beach themed knick knacks galore.
Her bedroom Is the showpiece though, like the room was lifted from a Zsa Zsa Gabor museum. There’s lace and tule and dangling pom-poms, fluffy AND sparkly pillows piled high, and rose colored lighting to boot.
DH told me he’d sleep on the couch before sleeping in a room that looks like a 6 year old girls bedroom.

You might be scratching your head and wondering how we know this so before you get any weirdo ideas, I’ll tell you the story.
We got a middle of the night phone call!
Her husband passed out in the bathroom a couple years ago and somehow kicked the toilet fill line with his foot on the way to the ground.
She takes ambien so he laid unconscious for quite some time before she woke up to the sound of water running and when she finally woke up the whole bedroom floor was inches deep.
That man was lucky he passed out on his back or he would have drowned.

Yup. Got a hundred stories about them.
my gma's bathroom and bedroom were pink. My mom repainted both rooms, but the tub and toilet are still both very much pink.

I am in denial. But, i am using a taterload of feed...
Yeah, the numbers don't matter much.. it's the amount of feed required that I think about. It must cost a fortune to feed them all, but you've been doing this long enough you probably know what you're doing... I gave my 2 boys away even though I paid $10 for them each, and I've been feeding them for 3 months. I would not do well in the poultry selling business.

That is absolutely brilliant. I hope you get some good ones! Are you going to start a thread, or post here about your progress? How long ago was he up for doing the deed? If it hasn't been too long, maybe some of your girls will be laying eggs he fertilized.

they are a bit old but you should get development out of 25% ish of them....

Set all the eggs! 2.jpeg

I figure the only way to make money selling poultry is to sell them as soon as they hatch. And i mostly did just that with the guineas. But quail are too tiny to take to swaps just hatched. I have not hatched a lot of chicks. I don't want to build a bunch more chicken coops and end up divorced.

I like your plan! Selling them at hatch is perfect

They are pretty old, but I cannot resist! If nothing else, it gives me something fun to do while I am (still!) looking for a job.

If I get at least one baby boy, it will be totally worth it!

OTOH, I may get some REALLY ugly, funny-looking 1/2 AC, 1/2 Bantam Brahma crosses...or perhaps Silkie or d'Uccle AC crosses too, as he really liked those little girls too, and they free-ranged together, and the eggs look similar.... :)
