Suzie, I feed to the lowest common denominator. If I have young pullets on pasture, everyone get's grower. Once the pullets are of laying age, I'll move everyone to layer. But I generally don't keep roosters more than 3 years. I haven't seen any issues in my 3 year old boys when I process them.

21 Peta should probably be spelled PITA. One of my friends scheduled a huge BBQ for his customers and potential customers. The morning was scheduled to process the birds for the BBQ. PETA showed up and stole a bunch of his birds. Of course they died a slow and miserable death in their care as they were already fully grown.

How can pita take birds without permission they are not government? Could he not tell them go to hell?

Grabbed them and ran. The Sheriff arrested a bunch of them, but others got away.

I would say it confirmed that there are genetic issues.

Its like an ingrown hair. I had a couple of Cochin mix cockerels that had ingrown feathers in their feet.

I had an aggressive tom that when I processed him there was an ingrown feather between his tail and vent... guess he had a good excuse for being grumpy

RJ....thanks for your input. It seems to be the common consensus. I'm going to give everyone layer. I really like the Layer feed that I've been buying and the chickens seem to do well on it

Does that mean more testing?

I know a few years ago someone on the Colorado thread kept a closed flock due to having Mereks.

I guess I am curious what it means long term for the flock.
