How do you feel about the local farmers markets? I see chicks and livestock there and was thinking that might be where I go next time. I wasn't very fond of TSC myself.

I'm kind of picky and prefer to meet on-farm, so I can see how they are kept. But I would still choose that option over TSC.

Thanks for your advice. I'm really wanting to do this right. I would love the girls to have fertilized eggs and hatch them, but I don't know how to go about that process since I don't have a rooster. I'm learning... It's going to be a fun journey.

You know you can buy fertile eggs of whatever breed you want and raise the babies with your girls. That way you'll have less problems adding to your flock and no disease possibility. Adding to my own flock, I prefer eggs or hatchery day olds. I don't like how the breeders nearby do things and our TSC is so unorganized it isn't even funny.

Aren't they though? The thing that kept me from adding one when I got the last little girls was price....man those jubilees are expensive! One chick was fourty dollars, that was more than Sallie, Ethel, Rene and Dutch combined. I have way too bad of luck to have an expensive chick.

The lady I have bought most of my chickens from, breeds Jubilee Orps. They are stunning......thanks for reminding me......now I want one of those too

There are to many reports of surprise roosters from TSC for me to ever buy from them.
Although we technically CAN have a rooster it wouldn't make for good relationships with the neighbors.
I would order from a reputable hatchery as I don't care for how the few breeders do things here either.

Choosing to not have a rooster definitely limits my options.
