Official Squatch Watchers

Ok, Something I bite my tongue on while on other threads, but you folks won't crucify me for sharing... Mill dates are cool and really the only thing we can rely on in most cases, but they are what they are, the date the grains were milled. When I found out my co-op was using 4 year old shelled non-GMO corn in my feeds and two year old fish meal, I about lost it. There are recommended shelf life's for whole stored grains, based upon their storage environment, but the regs focus on mill date. Low oil grains such as oats, barley, corn, etc have an average shelf life of 1 year and then nutritional value starts to drop. Two years still acceptable, four years still worked but not optimal by any stretch. Whole roasted soy, six months, fish meal exposed to Oxygen two months. One can extend those shelf life issues by putting them in a dark cool place in air tight containers with Oxygen absorbers. I use food grade buckets lined with mylar bags and double the recommended Oxygen absorbers.

Henny, you gave me an Idea... I'm gonna reach out to my feed store and ask if they'd like to sell some rare breed birds in the spring...

Two year old fish meal?! :barnie That is terrible! You had every right to be angry.

Selling birds sounds like a great idea!

Very good points!

@Texas Kiki , you usually order from IDEAL, right? Do you have to order very far in advance to get the chicks you want? Trying to decide if will have to brooder raise the chicks, or if I can put off ordering until I have a broody hen I can give the chicks to....
I have always just placed an order and gotten the chicks the next week....but I've never ordered anything special. I do believe they have waitlists for some breeds.

Speaking of derps, Negan and Rene have big combs which looked a little bit dark at the tips at roost time.
I grabbed the tepezcohuite and started coating tips.
Negan loves comb rubs so he was no problem, did his comb scratched his beard, told him he was a good boy gave him a little peck and moved on to Rene.
Started her, she drew her head up into her feathers like a turtle over and over.
Got her done as good as possible then little goober stuck her greasy noggin under her wing...first time ever!
Still scratched her beard, gave her a good girl and a peck but now I know she's got a really greasy armpit.
And yeah, I kiss those two on the comb, done it since they were babies the others grew out of wanting it, they did not.
If I get salmonella I did it to myself, i'm aware.:p

Well then he'd be in heaven! Plus sized French ladies with sweet, albeit odd personalities.
Loads of bountiful butt puff to snuggle into just bliss for a slim little rooster!
Just mountains of Madames.:gig
He is a bit of a chubby chaser. :gig He loves my cochin hens, especially the huge white one Blossom. She is his huckleberry :love

Thanks Kiki!
I do know their hatch day is each Wednesday.
Since I live so close I get the chicks early on Thursday mornings.
They always ship on Wednesdays.
