View attachment 1685962 All from today. Had a bit of an issue... several of them were bloody. But I think it was a head wound not a vent issue. Poor Lacy had clots on her head. Viscous little dinosaurs!
Awww! It's so tiny!!!!!
If they're new or restarting layers there might be some blood from passing the egg. Ash's first egg since Oct had a bit of blood on it, but all the future ones were fine.

Well hey ya'll, sorry iv'e been awol but iv'e been having a wonky spell.
I have been basically hospice caring for a chicken and even though that sort of thing should not bother me when it comes to animals it really does.
So anyway it is over, she passed this afternoon so I can ugly cry it out and get back to "normal".
Nunny, huge newfound respect for you and your crippled chicken experiences iv'e been doing it for weeks it sucks dirty socks.
If anyone is curious I lost Sallie, she just got worse and worse mobility wise.
I don't know if it was a lack of resistance or just a super nasty strain of bacteria but crap it was awful.
Missed you guys! :)
:hugsSorry about Sallie.
We all missed you too!

Ok few updates from my wonk weeks.
Rene went broody for three days and stopped laying.
She is not a nice broody, worse than Lulu she screams, bites and shuffles at you.
I may let her brood just because she's so cute.
Big news is Hobo is putting out! After close to two years she's finally putting the goods on the table.
Negan is a very, very, happy boy.
They roost side by side mostly every night now, sometimes he sleeps with Susan and Marlene maybe once a week.
So I will be able to hatch a little Hobo this year...about time! :)
Yay for all the good stuff. Can you toss some hobos under the broody?

Did you see we had a Smuv sighting? She hasn't been back since though.

We drove all over the neighborhood looking. We didn’t find him, but we also didn’t find any evidence of his demise. No piles of feathers or anything. It is night now so he won’t be home today but maybe tomorrow. Azygous had her two roosters comeback a full day later so that gives me hope.
Any update? I'd keep an eye on the hen, but that's b/c I have a couple feather pickers in my flock. Did the cockerel come back? I assume there were none of his feathers on the ground. He should be crowing if he's around, but I'd do a good once over of the yard to make sure he didn't get himself wedged into a tight spot, or flew up into a place he can't get out of. I hope he comes back. Stupid neighbors.

So, what does a homesteader bring with them when they are staying over at a friend's (who also has homesteading aspirations) house for a few days? 6 live cockerels (for the freezer) of course!

Squatchers I need your advice. Just after 5 pm my neighbor’s dogs broke into my yard and attacked my flock. My cockerel is missing. One hen is injured, but not badly. She has a small comb tear, lots of missing feathers , and some abrasions where the feathers were ripped out. No puncture wounds that I can find.

Question: after cleaning her wounds should I put her back with the flock tonight, or keep her inside? And is there anything else I should do for her?
Keep her inside for a day or two. They often go into shock and need some TLC

A processing Party!
I'm mainly bringing them because our friends (the husband anyway) wants experience butchering chickens. He's already done quail and rabbits. They also don't want to pass up pasture raised, organic fed meat :) I'm not sure if he is going to want to butcher them while we are there, but I'll provide instruction if he does and wants it. I won't participate though. The thought of bleeding out or gutting a chicken right now (because I'm pregnant) makes me feel ill. I would help with plucking and guidance, but that is about it.

They are never secured. Ever. They are two nasty tempered little French bulldogs and another little mix that roam all over the neighborhood. The owner claims he has tried to fix his fence but that the dogs somehow keep “escaping” In the past our fence has kept them out of our property but they broke in through a weak spot today. DH is repairing and reinforcing it tonight.
Catch em and take em to the pound.

I could maybe put one under Rene. I was just going to let her brood some of her midget babies but a surprise slipped in won't hurt her.:)
