Official Squatch Watchers

They are talking about all the wind on the weather channel. It very well could have been wind related.

In Sacramento on I-80, a light pole fell across some of the lanes. a bunch of cars crashed into it. One SUV went off of the road.

I do not know if it was wind related but there was higher than normal wind here last night

So the coop went up in a hurry as you all know. The back 6' is dirt. Not wanting anything to dig in and not wanting the birds to dig in the dirt I covered it with solid top pallets.

Yes dirt floor in the coop where they roost would be lovely. Except this was a garage at some point. I have no idea what's in the dirt. Besides the asphalt paper, plastic bag pieces and rusted metal I found. So I didn't want them digging in it.

Well the pallets were free and heavy as all get out but not the same size and didn't quite fill the space. So the 2' x 6' section right down the middle was open. I had some scrap plywood that I set down to bridge the gap and ta da a floor.

I just happened upon another little solid top pallet while at work. Ran off with it right away hoping it would fit that gap. I go out to the coop and pick up the plywood.

It's all taterin moldy!!!!!

Good grief. I drag it outside. Clean out the shavings that snuck under it and then go to look under one of the other pallets. The smaller of the two is still beyond heavy but I manage to pick it up.

Not black or green and almost like spider silk. So I clean that one up, get all the shavings out from between the boards, clean under it too, and put it back.

And as luck would have it...

My newly acquired pallet it not long enough but the exact width I need!

I didn't recover the pallets with shavings. Going to get some PDZ to put under there.

Looking for another little pallet to finish off that section.

Any other thoughts on what I can do? Other thoughts for how to cover that dirt section? Pavers were an idea... I like the raised floor of the pallets but good God I can't have the whole place mold.

I'd send ya'll my weather if I could 66 degrees and a slight breeze.
I'll get a good windstorm soon always do in the spring not looking forward to it either.
Enjoy the nice weather!

This is for anybody who was having a bad day today. After cleaning out klaus's cage I was shaking out her poop towel and a tiny piece of the poop got blown up into my mouth and was so far in the back of my throat that I could not spit it out. So basically I ate chicken poop. If I die sometime the next day or so that is why. I hope everybody gets a nice hearty laugh from the story.

Ok..... That sux bad!

Ideas long term......

Building a raised floor then cutting vents in the siding so air flows under the coop??

Pavers?

PDZ...ag lime......something to dry it up.....

Maybe a butt ton of sand or pea gravel then floor on top of that????

Mold! NOT GOOD!

You could keep your pallets if you put down a vapor barrier. The moisture wicking from the soil is making the mold so a plastic barrier would stop it.
It would be underneath too so your chickens couldn't eat it.
Another fix would be a layer of pea gravel on bottom instead or bare soil.
