That's a good meal. Avoid if possible white and processed carbs. Noodles, rice, potatoes, breads, all should be eaten in moderation.

Was he given a diet, or an amount of carbs per meal?

He definitely should add some exercise like walking to his day. Exercise will burn up sugar stored in muscles, and will increase the metabolism so what insulin your husband does produce can work better.

Fat will interfere with insulins effectiveness. That's why people often develop type 2 when they put on weight.

Moving and eating a clean diet can jump start the system pretty quickly. And tell your husband no more pop. Water, water, and water.

He is off the soda as of yesterday.
The white carbs are going to take some remembering to leave out. They have been a big part of what we eat. :hmm

The doc didn't give him carb goals or glucose goals. He even told him he doesn't need to test his glucose. :hmm:hmm
I call BS on that! Especially since he sent the nurse in with a meter right off. HA we already had his readings!

The doc actually told him that if he doesn't follow the prescribed plan he expects him to be dead within a year.
Way to be a supportive doctor.

I picked up "flavored" options since he hates plain water........um.....sparkling water is way gross! :sick
I am taking the unopened 12 packs back to the store.

I think the beverage changes are going to be hard for him.

What about fruit smoothies?
Milk?
Juices?

Milk wold be fine but is not water!

Juices are bad and too much fruit can be bad too.

The best thing would be to drink water. The incentive would be proving the Dr. wrong and living more than a year

Do whole milk instead of skim or reduced fat. The fat helps balance out the sugars in the milk so they don't uptake as quickly into the bloodstream.

I would be asking for a recommendation to a dietitian/nutritionist. Even though I had my sugar well under control when I saw the nutritionist, she gave me more ideas and ways feel less deprived.

Agree with what the others have said about fruit and water. And a new doctor. Water is best. But this stuff (sold at Walmart) might be a good alternative if he likes soda. They sell it at Walmart and it comes in lots of flavors. Tastes like a fruity soda but is sugar and dye free.

Mostly trying to come up with ways to break the monotony of just water. Even if that smoothie is a small 8oz maybe he won't hate water so much.

We definitely plan to prove that doctor very wrong

You put it very well.....I don't want him to feel deprived. It can get depressing when everything is a no.
We already do whole milk here so I got that right at least.

Juice is pure sugar. So are smoothies. Eat the fruit, leave the juice. The vegetable based ones seem to be lower carbs but I personally can't stand the taste. I drink water, green tea, coffee, and a single diet soda if I'm in the mood. I like A&W Root Beer.

Milk is okay but it's still a carb. To me a single carb serving is 15 carbs. Roughly what's in a piece of bread. My husband had a co-worker come down with type 2 diabetes. He was told no more than 50 carbs a meal. Hopefully they will give your husband and idea. Less carbs is always better. The co worker got rid of his by losing weight and exercising. I'm always envious of those that can get rid of their diabetes, and am slightly miffed when that opportunity isn't taken. :hmm

I would seek out a different doctor. There's a lot of bad ones in the diabetes realm. All that circulating sugar in the blood will damage everything in the body. It should be taken very seriously. My guess is doctors deal with a lot of people with diabetes that are in denial and don't listen, and continue to do as is.

As far as vegetables, tomatoes, potato, squash, carrot and corn are higher in carbs. Green vegetables are usually lower. I eat a lot of salads and green beans.

Tree nuts are a good snack.

It's a big adjustment, but if done correctly he can get rid of this usually. Let it go and it can become permanent, and shorten his life. On the way there diabetics can end up blind, with no legs, strokes, and kidney failure to add a few things you can drag to the grave with you if you don't do what you need to. :hmm

We have one of those ninja things.....I was hoping if I put in whole fruits (thinking puree them in there) it "could" be like having that shake he wants.

I didn't know that about tomatoes, squash, and carrots. :(

Going to have to rethink peanut butter too. There is a lot of added sugar in it.

I definitely want him to see a dietician.

I think this doctor being a primary care physician is not equipped to handle how extreme hubs case is so is counting on the endocrinologist to give target numbers.

I did find low carb no sugar tortillas at least!
That means hubs can still have fajitas! :)

This issue does change what I planned to plant in the garden some. I will skip the corn and try broccoli, Brussel sprouts, more beans and onions in that space instead. OH and turnip greens. Those have a lot of flavor.

At least hubs does like spinach and Swiss chard both cooked and raw.

I will check that out CSA. There is a trader Joe's in the next town I think. We have a Sprouts within walking distance and Kroger is our go to for a lot of things.

Get natural peanut butter (the stuff that separates) it is just peanuts.

Be careful with doing too many beans, they are starchy too.

Yes everything in moderation.

Thank all of you for being so patient with my dietary meltdown.
I would probably be sobbing in the corner without all of you. :hugs

No problem. That is what we are here for. I had to do a good bit of research for myself about a month ago, so all this is still fresh in my head. If it will help, I have something my nutritionist gave me that might help you out. I can PM it to you if you like.

Yes please! At this point anything is better than the big fat nothing the doc gave us.
