Official Squatch Watchers

We are getting 12-18 eggs a day (usually around 14-15) from 40 hens/pullets.

Awe! That sounds exhausting Red!!! So sorry!!!

It was. I would cry, but I'm too tired. As I told my husband, "In some ways, this was a really nice Christmas. In other ways, it was the Christmas from 'heck'." (I did not say "heck").

I thought mine were on strike until I found the nest. We also found another egg just outside the greenhouse. So the tally for today is 27.
Unfortunately my girls have been confined to their coops and run and haven't been out anywhere to stash eggs. I actually bought....yes I said bought eggs last week so I could do my baking. Did I mention that I BOUGHT eggs?

I found someone to buy my Bantam Brahmas! Yipee! Cost of the chicks and half the shipping. Still a loss overall, but I gained knowledge and that is priceless. Right?
I just don’t know what to think about the “Crele” Orpington. Sale or keep? Probably should keep hearing @Suzi18 talk about her Bantam Cochins not laying. Plus I have Silkies. But I do have 2 Welsummers and 2 Easter Eggers.

Are Bantams more prone to go broody?
Cochin Bantams certainly are.

Yes to bantams being more broody.
I would keep that gorgeous Orpington!

Awww Rae. :hugs I hope you don't freeze tonight.
Maybe tomorrow won't be so bad. :fl

Ah I see Sassy. That can be a PITA. Blowing snow got in my runs pretty good too. I am going to have to put some pallets for the girls to walk on. Your birds are a bit small and could get stuck. I would certainly try the pine straw. Just remember if composting it is high acid and can throw things off.

Suzi? You bought eggs? Ohmygawd!
Actually last year I had to also.

Bantams are notorious for going broody.

We have been buying eggs for years. Hoping that will change in February.

Suzi, I had to do the walk of shame for my baking needs this year as well. But we had a great breakfast this morning, with real eggs and sourdough pancakes.
