1 Parents are giving me a respite to BYC, cuz one of our chickens is sick. We've seen blood everywhere, and it's all over her comb. We think it's frostbite. We put blu-kote on it and moved the chicken's roosts to dad's workshop, which is connected to the workshop and warmer and drier, but not significantly enough to lose their acclimation.

Oooh, we're on the topic of taters, are we? I love me some mashed taters, and/or some tater tots. Don't judge me. They're good.

Ps. I'm a silly fan of tater tots too! In fact I had them on Christmas Eve.
 
Being winter I would let her sit it out.

Taters are good! Tots, fries, mashed, salads love me some good ole taters!


Smuv has eggs hatching! Bunch of yellow and a couple dark black/grey. They popped out quick too.


New for me is a puppy.
We named her Sable.

I totally understand being disappointed though. At least you have the means to keep him. It's like the whole 'tossing in extra chicks for warmth' thing. Like if you only wanted X# of birds AND you wanted only girls, but then they toss in a couple extras for warmth and you end up w/ birds you didn't want that could be boys & possibly a breed you didn't want and now you have to deal with that.

MPC says they don’t toss in extra birds, put that must be a common thing since they mentioned it. The Bantam Barred Rock died just after the 48 hour mark, they were so sweet about it and even sent me a code for a free full size chick of equal value. Of course I would have to buy additional chicks and shipping, works in their favor.

Hubby keeps talking about going on 2 week vacation this summer. As bad as I want to add a couple more specific colors, I cannot do any more chicks! For travel reasons and I am ready to be done with the chick phase! Now I have to wait until 3 of the chicks grow big enough to integrate. 2 of them I might be able to now, but I think another couple weeks might be better.
 
Combs bleed ALOT it can look like a massacre even with just a few solid pecks.
I have seen some bloody combs with mine and the head was pretty well coated in blood plus the wall from her shaking her head. Cleaning it up it was just 4 or 5 actual small peck marks.

If you don't have bagbalm ( which is expensive) you can also use chapstickbrek off a little blob and warm it by rolling it between your fingers. -just don't use it on yourself or your dad :eek::thafterwards!
I like carmex brand and it also comes in an ointment version in a little tiny tub which smells and feels a lot like bag balm.
