Official Squatch Watchers

duh... I know why... good home grown tomatoes are 12-15% sugar, store bought tomatoes 5% sugar.
Because the growers pick the store tomatoes before they are ripe, to ship them while they are hard so they will sell better. Shoppers will not buy a bruised tomato, no matter that it will taste better! Plant breeders are patenting the varieties to charge us gardeners more. Interesting reading at Fedco Seeds: https://www.fedcoseeds.com/seeds/why_save_seeds.htm

Do you think all Ketchup’s are the same? I have really never noticed a difference, but I am watching Sunday morning and see where Heinz has a patented tomato.
Funny Ketchup story... anyone who remembers some years ago they played with the color of ketchup. Made purple and green...
To play a joke on my dad the ladies of the house made the usual Saturday burger and fries but used green ketchup. He ate the whole meal and said nothing.
Finally we asked if the ketchup looked a little weird. He tells us it was a little runny and a darker color then usual but tasted fine.

Joke was on us. He is "color ignorant", a varient of color blind, he mixes shades of red, brown, and green. The ketchup was dark reddish brown to him! :lau He had no idea he had just eaten a meal with green ketchup.

Working on the chicken water heater again today. I was so busy thinking of things to do today, i didn't fall asleep until after 2 am!
Today it is windy and 53 degrees with wind gusts to 27 mph! But it is nice in the workshop with no wind.
I got one end on the heater so far today and spray painted the waterer black so it absorbs heat better.
Time for lunch and back to work!

I've been so busy the last couple days I don't think there is any way I'm gonna catch up :th

We had our families thanksgiving yesterday :celebrate my contribution was Spanish rice, beans and key lime pie cheesecake :drool

Good Afternoon Everybody!

Today is a cold, wet, NASTY day here and it is only getting colder. It is supposed to get down to 25 tonight. It started sleeting on the drive home from church and it is supposed to snow a little bit later on, but nothing is supposed to stick, thank goodness. Not that I don't like snow, but I'm not ready for it yet.

My back is feeling a good bit better, but still sore. Thankfully my SIL was able to help me lug the no-so-little munchkin around.

The chickens seem to be fine with this weather. I'm going to have to check all the coops later today to make sure everyone has dry sleeping quarters. I love my broody totes, but the one problem I have with them, is they hold water. I can't have my baby chickies standing on wet pine chips on a 25 degree night even if they have mama to help keep them warm. I think she is getting ready to wean them though. She is being less protective and showing less "broody" behavior (puffing up and "bock, bock"ing constantly). They are 8 weeks old now and are very well feathered out. I think the chicks will do well on their own if she decides to return to the chickshaw with the rest of the hens in the next week or two. She is lasting longer than my previous mama did, but it was warmer weather and I didn't introduce the chicks into the flock until they were 4 weeks old (I moved their run into the paddock with the main flock) and I started letting them loose in the paddock when they were 8-9 weeks old. This time, mama was kept separate but in the paddock with the flock the whole time and I started doing free-ranging introductions around 7-10 days old.
