Official Squatch Watchers

I was just reading on another thread that kale and spinach isn't good to feed to laying hens. Supposedly it makes for soft eggs? I feed mine kale all the time. It's their favorite. Anyone else ever heard this?

Mine won’t touch anything green and leafy. I thought it was my first birds. Tried it with second additions....nope. Ok, the little ones saw the big ones avoid it like the plague. Maybe that’s were they learned it. Third round of kids. Almost none of the original birds. Nope, nope, nope still won’t eat greens.

Weird

Raw potatoes are a bad thing for them yes.
There is a toxin ton taters especially the peels. I don't remember the name of it.

People should not eat taters where the skins are green from sun exposure. The toxins are stronger in them.

No idea about nanner peels or citrus.

Funny how different their tastes are. Mine love greens ...especially cabbage and kale. They also love sweet potatoes, broccoli and cucumbers. They won't touch apples or pears

I guess the concern is that spinach is high in oxalic acid which *may* inhibit calcium absorption. But I suspect they would have to eat a lot of spinach on a daily basis (and have no access to calcium supplements like oyster shell) to actually cause a problem. And kale isn’t actually very high in oxalates (compared to spinach) so I really don’t think we should worry. My girls love kale and spinach!
