Official Squatch Watchers

So I finally think I figured out who's giving me the thin-shelled, smaller than usual eggs. Yesterday Jackie was sitting in a nesting box then later there was 1 egg in it so I'm pretty sure it's hers. The thing is, I never knew what eggs she laid before so I'm not sure if she was even laying before. They have layer feed and I re-feed shells, and offer oyster shell so that shouldn't be a problem, provided she's eating it. I can't say that I've ever seen her eat from the feeder, but her crop isn't empty at night so she's eating something (& there's plenty of feed on the ground and I do see her pecking and scratching around. She's the one w/ the messed up beak. I think I'm going to toss some feed into a food dish on the floor and see if that helps, other than that the only thing I can think of is that her shell gland might be messed up. She seems fine otherwise so I'm not going to worry about it, it's likely it's the same situation I had w/ Jaiden and there's nothing I can do about it. I was going to ask the vet about her beak, if there was anything they could do, but then things happened and it wasn't really a priority anymore.

Maybe try feeding her mash with egg shells pulverized in it....

I NEED AN OPOSSUM CATCHER!!!!!!

View attachment 1252011

About 30 minutes ago, I hear my chickies SCREETCHING outside.... I'm yelling at DH and slappin the hell outta him to get the flashlight so I can shine it outside at the coops... he's all trying to put his bathrobe and slippers on.... (many 4 letter words were passed at this time). We find an opossum IN the prefab coop. One chickie was out in the run, and that's the one screaming bloody murder.

Lil bastard squeezed in through the *temporary* kennel fence that has, somehow, been *temporary* for over a month now. Gah I gotta get on DH's behind about finishing up that coop!!!

Needless to say, ALL of the current chickies are locked up in the prefab coop that isn't even supposed to hold 8 chickens..... gahhhhhhhh 2xs!!!! :barnie:barnie

So, time to kill me an opossum..... and yes, it is O-possum... and it will be dead within the week!!!
You go girl!!! Make yourself some O possum stew. I think Granny Clampett has a good recipe.:gig

Every chicken coop/run could benefit from a little something special...
GAWDY glam...
SHABBY chic...
GIRLY stuff...
BLING!

Here's the before:

Yard sale find.
So ugly it's beautiful...

Cleaned it up, stripped out the wiring and snapped out the sockets, then dab painted it GOLD, of course...

Then swapped out stick-in-the ground solar lights where the sockets used to be...

Ta-daaaaaa!

@apryl29 I have 13 hens total but none are egg a day layers. My two Wheaten Ameraucana lay slightly different colors so I’m waiting for one of them to start up again. They were not happy molters. My BC still hasn’t laid for me. But her sister who Suzi has started so I’m hopeful.

You could file her beak a little if you think it bothers her or causes problems. How it’s chipped is odd. You could very carefully put some super glue on it to stop it from splitting. Just don’t glue her beak shut! Obviously. :p

It looks like the bottom half of the beak might be a little long? Idk, compare it to the others.

LMAO DH had already headed out and had the damn thing frozen in fear. He was looking for something to shoo it out. I'm all like *shoo it out my aunt fannie*, grabbed the closest thing I saw and hit the bottom step of the porch at full speed. I get to the coop... DH looks at what's in my hand and goes *what in the HELL are you gonna do with that?*.... I look down... I had grabbed our garden hose spray attachment. Yeah, guess I was gonna drown it!!! :lau :gig
