For us, it is 7 miles of bad road to the nearest gas station mini-mart. The nearest "proper" grocery store is the Wally World 20 miles away. We keep a lot of staples like bread and milk in the freezer and have a bunch of dry goods and canned food.

Do you ever have a week where you don't have a few snow storms?Mmm, that 'stockpile' isn't very big at all. I usually have anywhere from 50--100 lbs of feed. I think I have 75 right now. I make sure to get an extra bag if we're supposed to have a week with a few snowstorms.
I use ~50 lbs a week. Maybe 40, depending on how many scraps they get. I also have some plain cracked corn they could be fed in a pinch.
150 lb a week?! Wow.. if I had to drive 150 miles for feed I'd be buying it by the truck load.I live near town, in fact nowadays the stores are 3 miles away. But it used to be we had to go to the far side of the next town to get to a decent size store. Back then the bridge across the river was a nightmare in the winter., and we went once a month in the good weather anyway.... So I still have the once a month mentality and am always stocked up until March on people food any way.. I go through about 150 lbs a week of poultry food so I do have to make a run for that. Unfortunately the local feed isn't cheap or fresh so I drive 150 mile round trip to get feed from a co-op mill. But they grind it on order and you have to order it 2 wks in advance and they are only open Mon- Thurs. .. I have too many poultry LOL
That's a brilliant idea. I need something to put grit & shell into. They keep knocking crap into the dish I have been using. I was looking at some of the ones they had at the store, but they're either plastic or metal and I have no easy way to attach them to my walls. This design would probably work, I could divide it into 2 sections & I wouldn't have to constantly refill it or dig the dirt out of it. Thanks for the idea!!I cut a hole in the wire and stick the part where they eat food food from into the hole. Then i attach a board to the bottom and screw that to the frame of the cage.

A while back those rooster feathers were a HUGE thing. They put them on little clips and put them in your hair. My kids had them.I want to make a wreath with all my feathers. Maybe some earrings from rooster saddle feathers. I have at least a gallon bag stuffed in the freezer.
It’s on my long project list.
Yeah... there's a few in JulyDo you ever have a week where you don't have a few snow storms?

We drive 225 miles for feed. However, my parents are now dealers for the feed company and they make the trip. My mom found that she actually spends less on horse feed now that she feeds them the organic feed. She had to feed the horses twice the amount of the cheap stuff made of food by products rather than grains and alfalfa. And one of the horses, is actually less of a jerk than he used to be on the commercial feed.I get 18 forty lb bags..720 lbs... a little over the weight limit of my ford escape.
I was getting a different co-op's that a closer farmer was getting in Indiana and delivering for the same price,, but they butchered the breeder hogs and don't go every month any more. When she goes she gets it for me...

yes when I went from feeding layer to grower they were eating less.. when I went from pellets to milled feed they were eating less and when I fermented it they really ate lessWe drive 225 miles for feed.
