It was awful. Of course, it was my very favorite chicken, Flower, the one I sneak inside and Skype with Smuvs (when her stupid Skype is working) with her on my lap (Flower, not Smuvs) when my hubby isn't home.
I heard all this noise and I ran out. Flower was laying on the ground on her side and a hawk flew off. There were feathers everywhere and blood was dripping out of her mouth and her beak was opening and closing; her eye was bloody and she was limp.
I thought she was gonna die or I was gonna have to put her down. I started screaming for my husband, barking out orders, snapped into emergency vet mode, ran in the house and wrapped her in a towel. Did a quick exam, flushed her wounds, syringed her NutriDrench, waited for my chicken friend Rose to get there (who is a vet tech) so she could hold her while I did a more thorough exam. I listened to her heart and lungs with my steth, went over her head to vent.
She has little lacerations to the front of her comb, right beak, and under her neck. Her right eye was cloudy and bloody looking (behind the anterior chamber, which is not good) and was mostly shut.I warmed her, loved her, syringed her Drench, and the blood in her mouth cleared, thankfully it was from the laceration, not lungs.
She became more alert, started standing, and started eating mealworms and drinking!

Here she is in her dog carrier/hospital room. You can see the comb is a little floppy and swollen in the front.

The eye is already more open, less bloody looking so she may not lose her sight. The purple is Blue Kote.
Thank the gods or the universe or whoever. I think she will live. I hope she will live. She is eating , drinking, and I am letting her rest in the quiet.
Rose took the 4 baby chooks and will love and treasure them. Itold her to take a picture with her Iphone (cuz my phone sucks) and I will send it to you guys later.
Cindi, feeling very relieved!!
