Official Squatch Watchers

Those flies LOVE me! And I have a terrible reaction to their bites too. I get a massive welt that itches like crazy and lasts for at least 2 weeks.
An old Army scout told me to drink tonic water. Must contain quinine. Tastes awful but something about sweating it out keeps the bugs away. I didn’t get the chance to try it yet but I will! Adding flavor is ok but he said it still tastes pretty bad.
Oh man! So worth a try!!
Putting the Tea Tree oil right after they bite works good but I just have a horrible reaction to it, nothing helps keep the bumps down. The itching stops for the most part with it for a little while.

Does a gin and tonic before bed actually deter mosquitoes?

No. This myth dates back to colonial India, where the British would sink tonic water, which contained quinine, to ward off mosquito-borne malaria. Nowadays, the amount of quinine in tonic is much lower, so minute in fact that it is too risky to rely on it. Creams offer th

The experiments involved pinpointing the pair of tiny flaps located at the tip of the mosquito's proboscis or "beak." These flaps, which have tiny hairs that serve as chemical sensing organs, make contact with a human's skin. Electrodes were placed on a single hair to record the electrical impulses from nerve cells within the hair.

Scientists discovered that three sensory cells were activated in the hair. One cell was activated by salt, a second cell was activated by sugar, and a third cell was activated by either quinine or the insect repellents tested, including DEET.

Here’s our garden.

It is roughly 80x80 and we’re putting up a 6’ + high fence. I like the gate we’ve put in down by our house.

With how much the bugs like me I'll give it a try anyway. LOL Won't hurt.

I react to tick bites, red and itchy. And pretty much any insect bite, and virginia creeper, plus poison ivy. Not fun.

Oh, good idea. I usually just toss the cantaloupe & watermelon carcasses out for them, but putting stuff in them would be a good idea. Might make them last longer. I wish pumpkins grew earlier b/c that would be something nice to toss out there that way.

&s for the drowned rats... mine went dusting in their usual spot which was wet from all the rain we got over the weekend. They were all dirty and gross and muddy.

Good idea, we'll have to try that. I was trying to figure out how to lure them into the pool & that would work well. I don't think I'll be able to put the pool in their run b/c it'd make emptying & filling it really difficult.

So fluffy!!!

I'm more worried about attracting the wrong kind of bee. Last summer we had a hornets nest near the coop, and a yellow jacket nest in a bush up front of the house. Right now we're seeing big fat carpenter bees and black wasps. I need to get the stinging bug catcher things again. We also have ground bees. Seriously cannot win w/ the yard bugs. I'm optimistic that the chickens will help w/ the tick situation though.

It's been raining quite a bit here so my girls stink to high heaven. It'd be nice to have something to combat the smell a bit.

That is an amazing photo. It looks like one of those trendy band photos from a poster.

Brilliant idea! Def going to use that when my mom decides 2 months too late to start the garden (if I can find the post hole digger).

I just want to confirm what you're saying. The door that's 3' off the ground is the in the run and would let the chickens out into the world to free range? Or do you mean off the coop and into an enclosed run?
If it's the former, I feel like that's unsafe b/c even if you aren't considering things like weasels, birds like hawks and owls might realize there's an opening. Plus you're forgetting jumping animals, like cats, don't need to scale a wall to get inside. We had a cat who'd jump from the floor to the top of an open door and sleep there for hours. You could make the door 3' up, just close it at night. It'd keep the kids inside where it's safe during the day & allow the older ones to go in/out as they wish, but closing it at night would keep them safe.

Good luck w/ the broody. What kind of eggs are you setting?
Yeah that’s kind what I finally got to it’s mostly just to keep the little guys safe

Oh lordy what a time getting those derps up. I painted the paving stones so of course ya'll know the world came to an end....omg! The rocks are yellow and lavender now ohhhh taters run away! :barnie
