Gorgeous!
Chickens must not be able to get to it! :gig

Nope. No chickens in the front yard. :lau

I have a welsummer hen 15 months old.
Rosie.
Her comb which is big and jaunty and hangs to one side, is a little pale.
I think the heat was getting to her today. High temp was 93.
Nobody laid an egg today, including her. But I wasn’t worries about that because she did lay yesterday and she’s not a daily layer. She’s about 5/7 days.

You all know I’m a biosecurity freakazoid.
No new birds.
Don’t go anywhere.

Check up findings:
No mites, lice, no evidence of worms that I’ve seen yet (meaning I “hand pick” their coop daily or every other day)
Clean ears
Eyes bright and pupils equal and normal in shape and reactivity.
Wings equally strong
Normal posture
Normal gate
Feet gripping and walking normally
Average ticklishness
*threw this in for fun.
Normal crop, plenty in there, just not bulging full.
I’d say her appetite was not huge today but I think all of them felt like they’d eaten less feed that normal today.

One big surprise, she had naked boobies. Really naked. Like she was thinking but didn’t want anybody else to know, “oh maybe I might try out being Broody just for fun and then stacey will send me to live at the librarians house too. I hear there a hot hipster rooster there with a beard. ” I thought Welsummers weren’t a Broody breed!

She wasn’t adverse to eating the good stuff. She did say yes to:
some fresh dill, cilantro, watermelon, and a few blueberries, plus a little pile of mealworms. This was after her spa treatment and checkup.
Oh , and 3/4 a dropperful of nutridrench for good measure.

Spa treatment :
Filled a bucket about 6 inches deep with cool water and let her stand in it to cool off for a while, eventually she decided to take a load off so her tummy got a good cool off too while I sat on a stool with her between my legs and talked to her.
This is never stressful because my birds know that the red bucket means special attention and treats.

Her vent looked normal and winked at me.
Cleaned up some booty feathers while I was in the neighborhood, but they weren’t especially gross, she’s just reallllly fluffy back there and her bustle needs a little trim-n-fluff periodically.

Washed her feet and legs and noticed some of the scales were dirty down by her ankles.
Again not gross. Just slightly. Washed her up to her knees.
She was dustbathing in a deep hole today. They were all dustbathing today. Purring away.
Does anyone else’s chickens love laying sideways on your laps while having their feet washed with a soapy washcloth?
Good gosh, my girls love this so much.
She had a slight bumble on one foot.
I don’t know why but these Welsummers seem to be prone to it.
Two buffs live under the exact same conditions and have never had one (knock on wood) but the 2 Welsummers have them pretty often.
It is very minor.
Picked off the scab. No corn under it. Treated with clear iodine.

I left the window open in their coop tonight (extra heavyweight hardware cloth attached from the inside ) to let some cool air flow through) and pushed aside the shavings under her so I can look at her poop in the AM.

Any thoughts ?

To do list for tomorrow:

Put iodine on the tiny bumble again.

Maybe spray her legs incase of mites?
Ugh- should I spray my coop just because or not unless I see something?

*Four days ago I tore it apart and did a MAJOR ceiling to floor “spring” cleaning.
I was definitely on the lookout but did not see any critters WHATSOEVER!

Check out the poop situation.
Anyone think I should give her safeguard just because?

It has been rainy as heck for several weeks and they do freerange and dig up worms...they are serious bug eaters. Definitely NOT vegetarians.

Thanks for being squatchers.
I’ll read responses in the morn. I’m being told to knock it off.

Nighty.

As to her pale comb....
I think it is more likely that it was hot, she may be playing at going broody, and it was hot.

Yup I said hot twice there. Several of mine take the day off if it is hot and they do get pale wen its really hot.

In the ten+ years of keeping birds in town I have had 6 fecal tests run. Worms have never been found. The only positive test was coccidiosis and that was weird cause it an adult hen and all that.

Personally I don't want to treat them for worms unless a fecal comes back positive. Different worms different meds.......

My flock I had in the country were super healthy. I mean like super chickens. I lost a BR to drowning and a japanese blacktail to January broody in sub zero temps. Never had to medicate or treat anything with them.

I'd say just broody. Mine sometimes lose color when broody, sometimes not. But bare breast? Yea, sure sign.
Hopefully the spa treatment changed her mind, i wish I could treat all of mine that way.

We have a duckling this morning. 3 eggs to go.
