Smuvey, I just added check the wing pockets to my post. I don't think apryl saw that part though. I was editing it and she had liked it by the time I was done.
I didn't, but I checked her a couple times before I left. It wouldn't have climbed under another bird, would it have? Like if it was sitting on the nest to lay and the chick came over and crawled under and be hidden under them, would it?

Give it a little bit and check everything again, then wait til morning and check around Loki before completely giving up.
Good idea. I'll go back tonight and look around again.

Did Loki have more eggs to hatch? Or could find some youngins to give her? I’d hate for you to get more then lose those if something was getting in the coop. So strange.
No, she just had the 1 egg that was viable. the others didn't grow at all. Yeah, I thought about trying to get her a couple, but then what if they also disappear.

Yes, it totally would crawl under a strange butt.:lau

Nugget is gone. Literally. I went home during lunch to take some eggs and fish to Loki and the rest of the chickens and Loki got up and there was no baby. I looked everywhere and I can't find it. I don't hear any peeping. So the only thing I can come up with is that something ate her. Either a snake or rat. I saw no blood and Loki was upset and looking for the baby too. And now I get to tell my kids that yet another pet is gone. I would have a slight amount of hope that it was still alive but it is only 60 degrees out today.
I'm sorry, that sucks.

:hugs

I agree, more eggs or babies for Loki are in order if she doesn't snap out of broody mode within a few days.

I am so incredibly sorry.

I would get her a couple little chicks if possible.
I found the little buggers fit through chicken wire until they were over a week old.

One thing that an old friend of mine had happen.....gross but true by the way....

They had 20+ eggs hatch in a 24 hour period. The chicks can fit through chicken wire. As the chicks wandered about the other hens nabbed and ate every single one.

I really hope that didn't happen to nugget. :hugs

It has been a perfect day for gardening here. Upper 60's, sunny and breezy. Thankfully, after 10:30, I had no work to do until 3. So I spent about 4 hours outside working.

I trimmed and tied up the tomato plants.

I planted the Comfrey starts outside the garden fence. The tiller worked nicely at turning under the grass so I could plant there.

And I got a nice sunburn on my shoulders and neck.

My mom worked on planting more corn and beans and stringing up the peas.

We had a cute little companion on one of our water breaks.

Oh, and I have another Dark Cornish baby and another one pipping.

I'll take a look at the others too then, but I don't think they'd be as accepting of a stray chick embedding itself in their wings.

I'm sorry, that sucks.

I'll keep an eye on her. I went to TSC last night and they didn't have any more chicks so it'd have to be eggs again.

Wow, I didn't see any blood or remnants of parts, so hopefully that's not the case. Nugget was pretty tiny being that it was a 1/2 bantam breed. I added walls to the dog cage I had, but Loki wasn't having it. I should have done it sooner and put the egg in there before it hatched. Hindsight... Hopefully she'll break broody, if not I'll have to wait another week to get her some eggs b/c they'll hatch while we're gone. I need to make her better arrangements if we're going to do this again.
