Thanks, Henny and Misty. If he goes, he will be my second AC to die. The first one, Dobby, was never right to begin with, but Laf has always been strong, healthy, and gorgeous! And he is a really nice rooster; he was my first experience with a roo. I didn't want him initially, but he came as part of a trio and the guy through little stunted Dobby in as an extra.

I wanted to eventually hatch out some little black babies, because he is stunning. I hope he pulls through whatever he has.

@pitbullmomma I’m sorry Lafayette isn’t feeling well. Did you look for lice and mites? Worms? Coccidiosis? Those are the first things, and easiest, to check for. How’s the weather been? Too hot and humid for him maybe.

I did check for parasites. None seen. I looked in his mouth: normal. No weird smells. Vent looks good. Crop normal and emptying. The only thing I haven't seen is his poo. However, I haven't seen any bloody or wormy looking poo in the run or coop.

It has been very hot and humid here. I put ice water in the runs, give them melons and frozen fruit/veggies....I just don't know!

No earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, or humidity here. We do get HOT and then COLD and not very affordable either.
Then there are the wildfires too.

Maybe a hats why folks have summer and winter homes in different places.

@staceyj can you turn the neighbors in for breeding skeeters? Here the folks harboring skeeter ponds are made to clean it up.

Other than that our city sprays when they get bad. For human relief the citronella torches help. Not sure what would be safe for the chickens.

Good morning peeps!

I have a job interview today. It's less than half an hour from my house and is an elementary school with ~ 600 kids, which would be kinda my dream job. Wish me luck.

I think my beautiful black roo, Lafayette, is gonna die. I don't know what's wrong with him. He's been lethargic for the past few days, walking slowly, tail is slumped, comb is flopped over. He hasn't crowed in days. He's lost weight.

I've been giving him electrolytes and probiotics and boiled an egg yesterday which he scarfed down. He is eating and drinking well. I gave him Nutridrench. I haven't seen his poo.

I went in the run and he was just sitting down in the dirt. I feel so bad. I love that rooster! He's only a little over a year old. He was fine right up until he wasn't.

I have to go get ready for that job interview. I'm going to boil an egg for him first.

He had the most annoying crow, like a lunatic woman. Now I would give anything to hear him crow.

Look inside his mouth! Maybe he has canker.

@Molpet The volcanoes aren't a real threat as long as you pay attention to the geology and part eruption and lahar history. Can't do much about earthquakes, but they are very few and very far between, we've only had one sizable one that we actually felt in the 23 years we've lived here. Taxes are limited to gas and sales for the most part. Some cities have taxes, but there is no state tax, they figure it's better to get money from everyone who spends money in the state instead of getting income taxes from just those who are employed in the state. That way they get all of the tourists and travelers, which suits me fine. The food at the stores aren't taxed, but all other goods are. At least everyone gets taxed equally by the state that way.

ETA No rules on collecting rainwater. Also, Mt. St. Helen's gives warnings before doing anything, and the rest of our volcanoes follow suit. They can be destructive, but if you do your research, you'll find plenty of places that are not severely threatened. Where I'm at, the local volcano, Mt. Rainier, would be more of an inconvenience than a danger. You just have to be informed and refuse to get complacent. I see the mountain on any clear day that I go anywhere, and whenever I go anywhere in the valleys that are at risk for lahars, I make sure to check the evacuation routes in the area. I also get alerts on my phone for anything going on in my area. Honestly, it's not any different than being in Tornado Alley and doing stuff. You're always diligent there, paying attention to weather and where the safest place to go if you're not home when the sirens go off.

I watched a PBS show on where the lava, gas and tsunami would go and the evacuation routes... in a worst case blow up... if you can see it your toast from the toxic gas if nothing else... they said there was no way with the number of people that everyone could get out using the evacuation routes.
that being said it is beautiful country.. and worth looking into

Yes tornados don't always give much warning, They have to form somewhere and there have been several cases by me with no alert and the tornado popped up and wiped out a town. One reason I want to get out of here, too many people/trucks is the other.

Best of luck w/ that one. I think you're only allowed to have 1 off that list. In my case I'd have to add job availability & low crime rate... I don't live in the saddest little town ever for nothing.

My parents used to summer in Bend Oregon and tow the trailer to Rio Hondo tx in the winter.. until it got to be too much and they bought a house in TX... no way would I want to live in that part of TX.. I used to go down between Veterans day and Thanksgiving and clean the algae off the house, sweating like crazy

Good morning people!
Yesterday we only had ONE storm!
I spent the entire morning sweating and scrubbing my coop inside from top to bottom! The humidity has been so oppressive and thick all summer I was noticing mold growth despite plenty of ventilation.
The mosquitos are terrible right now!

Any suggestions for repelling them? No standing water in my yard but I know there’s breeding spots all over my neighbors yard which I can’t do anything about.

I like the Cedarcide repellent. I apply several times a day when the skeeters are out, only once if just trying to keep ticks off because i get busy and forget.
