Hey squatchers, what (if anything) do you do when your girls are molting? This is my first time witnessing an adult molt, and my SS hen is acting pretty miserable. Do you all provide any supplemental foods or anything to help the regrowth process? Thanks!

She looks so indignant, poor baby! :D

Increased protein, bugs, eggs, fish or game bird feed.
I have dried mealworms, but I don’t want the piggy Cochins getting fat, so I have to be careful.

Feather fixer or switch to flock raiser with free choice calcium.

Feather fixer works very well though
They are on an all flock type feed right now but it is not very high in protein. May look into some feather fixer, thanks.

My first molt too...they look pretty pathetic!! I give them extra eggs. They seem fine, they just look awful.

And I read they are more painful wheer their pinfeathers are growing in (like on their head) but mine seem to like it when I rub 'em there. Who knows.

How are yours acting? Or is it just that they look bad?

She is the only one molting right now. The two Cochins are holding tight to their feathers and the others are all too young.

Amelia was acting normal until a few days ago, now I notice she is distancing herself from the flock a bit. Hanging out by herself. Poor baby is having a rough time.

They like it when you break the capsules letting the pin feathers out

Hmmm, may have to try that if she will let me get close enough. She is being very skiddish right now.

That first picture was from a few days ago...she looks even worse now. Poor lil naked butt

Where didja find all the chicken stuff? Looks a little like the displays at Tuesday Morning but ours hardly ever has chicken things.

OMG that is some overwhelming chickenalia!!!!! Is that Hobby Lobby? They have tons of chicken stuff.

You exercised great restraint. I would have spent like $500 on all that business....

Pat Catans. Recently bought by Michaels craft stores. What you’ll never believe was the prices! The two tin cutouts were $3 each. So was the metal looking plate. The bigger white plate with the rooster print was a whopping $4.50. Everything was 70% off. I’m tempted to go back!

As for molting birds— I have a few that obviously feel ill. My poor Roo Trouble seems to have fallen into that category. He looks dreadful and seems afraid of his own shadow. (Pretty sure Taterhead is taking advantage)
I feed Feather Fixer all the time. It was the best I could come up with to compromise between calcium and protein with a constantly fluctuating flock. I try to give extra protein treats to help them recover faster.
Each bird is different. Some don’t mind being handled others would prefer I leave them alone.

Been a BUSY day here.
Storm rolling in so had to get the gals houses cleaned.
Went grocery shopping for seriously just a few things.W
I think everyone was there!
Had to hit 3 stores to find hen feed.

Seriously one would think it was the end of days the way people react to a one day storm here.

The house cleaning was on the list for tomorrow but I don't want to do it in 25° temps and snow.
Today was a wonderful 60°.
