Official Squatch Watchers

I got one laying now lol! I'm glad she was just laying, looked like she was about to die. She decided to lay in everybody's way, but they waited really patienly for her to do her thing. I think i'm as proud of that as I am the egg. That patience crap normally does not happen in the coop.:caf
Welcome back! I hope you had a really good time.

:woot Yeah eggie!!

Clean little Beavis egg, almost the size of a small store egg. Laying those parakeet eggs just as expected.;)

I always hear that about B cochins ......but mine easily lay 5 times a week during laying season. Mine are very good reliable layers. My D'ucclle lays really good sized eggs 5 days a week also. Her eggs are the size of a grocery store large egg....poor girl.....ouch!
That is the problem with averages. Some breeds go a long time not laying eggs. Cocchins because they are a broody breed. Others just stop laying some times.

The average is over a year. The best layers get 5 eggs a week and usually they lay almost every day during the first laying season. The second year will be less and many do not lay any eggs in the winter without supplemental light.

Chickens are amazing!

This has been my experience.

I would average my cochins at 2 a week over the course of a year.
Just not supreme layers.......BUT mine do tend to very long lives which makes me happy.

You know if you just have hens for enjoyment mostly how many eggs do you really need anyway? I'd way rather have nice, happy, long living sparse layers than mean little egg machines that are going to peter out pretty fast and not be pleasant to keep.:)

My first hens were all hand me downs. Production reds and leghorns. I only have 1 left. I lost most of not all of then to reproductive issues.
After the first loss I decided to go with dual purpose breeds.
Other then my recent problems they have all been good birds.
