Official Squatch Watchers

So, I just had to deal with a minor chicken emergency. I looked outside this morning and I didn't see Fat Daddy (my Dark Cornish cock bird). I went out and looked for him and he was standing in the middle of the coop and couldn't figure out how to leave. I pick him up and look at him. His eyes were stuck shut and swollen. I brought him inside, and cleaned him up with warm water on a rag and unstuck his eyes. Fortunately, his eyes are just fine. He was perfectly well behaved and even put up with Thing 1 petting him. We put him in one of our broody setups by himself but inside the garden with the rest of the flock until he heals up a bit. Poor guy has had a rough time.

Poor guy
Might have gotten dust and such in his eyes when he turtled

Yeah, he is doing better now, eating and drinking, but is going in the box in his run and resting quite often, but the fact that he started eating as soon as I gave him food was very encouraging.

Still handsome, even when he is all bloodied up.

WOW Rae! I am learning things I would never have thought could happen.
Turtling is something I would have thought they could fix themselves.
So glad he he has an observant keeper!

I know I have more birds than I actually need but I definitely have fewer eggs and to many broody birds........

I cannot believe I am considering getting a few California Whites.
:th

Edited because auto-incorrect thinks I should type like a character from Fat Albert sounds.
:hmm

Turtling can happen to any bird, but is more likely to happen in meat birds (particularly large males) with broad backs because they have a harder time rolling over. If left too long, it can kill them. I was just glad he didn't die from being stuck on his back for at least 2 hours.

Hi guys,

I finally got home (long day at work), took care of the dogs and chickens, and am trying to catch up.

Thanks for all the hugs and sympathy...I was afraid to come home today because I was terrified of finding any more dead chickens! Last night DH nailed up all the hardware cloth that was stapled, but reading what you all wrote scared me (everyone said use screws, and washers). DH says that nails should be strong enough, but do you think that is true?

I'm wondering what got them. It was during the day (late afternoon most likely, both girls). My first one's neck was bitten and skin stripped off, and they opened up her crop and ate some of the guts including liver (ugh).

Willow (yesterday) had the skin on her neck stripped, and her trachea was snapped in half. Both girls had feathers everywhere. You think hawk, or raccoon?

Suzi is hanging in there. She is eating some soft food that I am hand feeding her, and is drinking. I am wondering how the heck she got half her beak ripped off and was still inside the secure run. My cockerel Negan had some blood on his comb, I wonder if it's possible that it was a very rough mating??

The weird thing is that yesterday, one of my Cemani girls in the not-secure coop also had an upper beak injury. I was wondering if they were fighting through the divider (hardware cloth) between runs...?

Henny, I am so sorry about your kitty. :( :hit :hugsBut I am glad for both of you that she went peacefully.

Ron, happy birthday! Don't listen to Chickassan, she's just jealous of your age and wisdom. :D

@sourland, Welcome to the Squatch! I have been dying for another NJ person on here. Where you from? Want a couple cockerels? (Silkie/Cemani or Serama crosses). I'll deliver, lol. I'm in Southern Ocean County with the pineys (Piney Power!) of which I refuse to cop to being one of!

(Edited as always for godawful crappy typing)
My guess for the 2 w/ beak issues is that they got it caught on something, could be the fencing, or forgot to duck coming out the pop door. Did you see blood anywhere else? I wouldn't think they'd be able to get to each other well enough through the fence.

We must have gotten everyone else's rain. Its crazy!
Sorry! It couldn't come when it was actually needed, right?

@pitbullmomma , now that i'm not giggle fitting your attacker sounds like a raccoon. Suzi and Negan may have hurt themselves freaking out. And your hubs isn't right, nails are not enough coons can just pull them out just like it did the staples.
x2 on the raccoon & staples.

Ahahahaha, I just wrote something fowl (foul--get it?) and immediately erased it. My nasty-azz Jersey mouth is gonna get us shut down!

Gawd, where is Smuv when you need her the most! I miss that crazy wench. She would've beenall over this like--like--I dunno, raccoons all up in my chickens...

I hope it was fabulous, and that you got lots of presents! (Or at least one good little one) :D

I thought of something, but then decided I didn't want to get us 'cleaned'. I will say that when I first got birds I felt weird saying cockerel.. still kinda do. When I listed my boys on craigslist I put rooster and cockerel b/c while chicken people might know the term, when you're searching for something online the more generic term will get you more results. When I was looking for chicks I didn't dare enter chicks, I typed in chickens then scrolled through. Of course 'chicks' would have brought up what I wanted, but also a lot of what I didn't want. Same can be said for searching for 'cocks' as opposed to rooster.

Sounds like "fence staples". No good at all.
:th

Using those but covering with a 1x2 that is screwed in works.

(Still uses scews).
:p
Plus you run a greater chance that that little tiny single hardware wire will snap against the staple too.

Oh here it is!!!
:frowHappy b-day @ronott1
I hope you had a great day.
And an early one to everyone who needs it!

Ok, I'm a little sad.:hit

But durn it, I need a break.
I felt bad when my kids stopped nursing too, kinda like they didn't need me anymore. Obviously they still did, but you know what I mean. Hopefully you'll be able to get more rest now.

:frowMorning peeps!

Have had a migraine since 4 and it’s finally lifting a little.

@Redhead Rae, you baby belly is adorbs. :celebrate
Taller women carry pregnancy with grace and elegance. Like athletes, with a curve!

I love baby bump documentation young women do! I also love the styles women wear during pregnancy now.
Show that bump!
They are celebratory instead of shameful! Ugh. I hated the gigantic-flowy-ruffly-pastel-itchy-uncomfortable tent monstrosities we wore “back in my day”.

As far as the nighttime nursing... you’ve given of yourself for little T-1 since he was conceived.
Snuggle up and read a couple of extra books today for that closeness.
Even at rest, every one of your body systems is working 24/7 to support the growth and development of “the one in the bump”. :love

Let your body start storing up energy for T-2.
As a mom of four, I’ll share my opinion that you are going to need it.
I LOVED those big flowy muumuus! I got so huge compared to how big I was before that nothing I owned fit for the last month. I had one dress that still fit, and a couple tank tops & shorts. This was before there was maternity sections in stores and there wasn't much of a plus section. I remember going to the mall and paying WAYYYYY too much for a pair of pants that I quickly out grew (so much for the just buy your current size! theory). Then 2nd time around was better b/c they suddenly realized pregnant people needed clothes too.

Poor guy. He's having a bad couple of days. Glad he seems to be perking up.

Good afternoon! Stayed up way later than I planned installing bluestacks on a netbook from the far past. I got it done but it was slightly more involved than I planned, pretty much swapped out everything inside just to run a free emulator. I already had junk parts and was being paid but still...jeeze.
Now the bed is full of ice cream sandwich wrappers and tiny screws.
The girls are pulling the same stunt as Henny's calling me outside for nothing, which is really sweet.
Still handsome, even when he is all bloodied up.

He's a big boy! Or a large cock if i'm using correct terminology. He really fits his name nicely.:)
