good tips for poultry dust!

Elector psp is the current gold standard for getting rid of mites. It works topically on the poultry and can be diluted a lot and made into a spray for the coop. A fellow BYC member could not get rid of mites with poultry dust, sprays and other methods. Elector got rid of them immediately.

It is expensive though!
You’re Right Ron. It is.
I just couldn't justify that expense for my little flock.

I’d have to try everything else first.

Now if the mites got on DH....lol ! Then I bet money would be no object!

I don’t know if this would be temporarily more appealing for you because I’m a big fan of spray for bug too, but in light of your current weather forecast, there is garden an poultry dust with sort of a nozzle tip.
It’s not terribly effective as a means of application but it beats the kind that comes in the Parmesan cheese container!
As an option you could stop at the dollar store and pick up some ketchup squeeze bottles to use.
Use a funnel to transfer from the Parmesan cheese shaker container into this squeeze bottle and go to town squirting around.
Please do this in your garage or on the porch.
Tie a rag around your mouth and nose.
Shower ASAP afterwards.
The dust is very fine like baby powder and using it creates a cloud. It settles fast, but the object it for it NOT to settle IN YOUR LUNGS or ON YOUR SKIN.

Birds are easy. Pour a bunch of the powder in an old thin sock rubberband it closed and use it like a powder puff.
Pits, vents and neck, and middle of back.

Bag and dispose of whatever material you have in the nesting boxes in particular. The SPRINKLE LIBERALLY in the bottom of the nesting boxes plus a squirt on top for good measure.

Get the spray kind too and with an old rag, spray and rub down each plane of the roosts. Shirt the powder around where the roost connect to the walls or wherever.
Cracks and crevices are key in my opinion.
As soon as the weather breaks, clean up all bedding, (bag and dispose of), and re-treat everywhere with the spray.

My first go around with lice was a test of my patience. I tried the dust. No dead bugs. I tried coconut oil. The chickens looked ready for the fry pan, but still had bugs. That's when I went nuclear on the little creepy crawlies! I spent the big bucks and bought the Elector PSP. It really is buggy napalm. One and done, dead skin critters! It is a liquid though. In these temps that worries me. I don't have to soak the birds with it but the idea is to get it to their skin. Cold wet skin is bad. Even with a down coat.
I may be out there with a q-tip dabbing birdie butth¤les strategically.

And in case anyone want some buggy napalm....please let me know!

... I ordered chicks...

Don't bury the lead woman! What kind? How many? When are they arriving? How long before we get pictures?!!! :celebrate:pop
Not until April. It's going to take forever! :caf I'm hoping broody queen wants babies by then. If not I'm going to try and entice her with a nest of golfballs. If she won't take them I'll brood but wow having her do it was way easier.
I went with Meyers so I can pick them up. As much as I want Swedish Flowers I just don't think they have been breeding them long enough. I did find a breeder of SFH in Michigan but best bet is to hatch and I always end up with lots of boys.
So I have my name on Dark Brahama, Spitzhouben, Cream Legbar, and DERPS! LOL I can't resist their bearded faces.
I was hoping to get some legbars from the lady who is 5 min from me but when I asked all I got was "with this weather they aren't laying very well." I asked about price 2x and didn't get a straight answer. If she comes through and I can afford her birds I'll cancel them from Meyer. But I wanted my name on the list.

DERPs! :ya That will be so fun! And I love my Legbars, they are so funny. April can't come soon enough!!! :wee

Basset's cricket ranch, Amazon. As long as you don't mind the die off, i.e., as long as your birds will eat the dead ones, it's worth it. In the cold weather you will lose a lot of them. If you're feeding the bearded dragon, get them from the local pet store, you can get a decent amount and not have nearly as much loss. I finally decided to just stick with superworms online and get the crickets at the pet store. You can try breeding your own crickets, but you'll need to purchase enough for breeding and feeding.
