Yes we have the roller coaster ride coming up too... Monday 52 , is our warm day. I am just glad no negatives in the forecast.. poor chickens have a lot of frostbiteInstead of -4 it is +29 here, and supposed to get up to 52 today. We are supposed to get up to 64 by Monday.
Then it goes back into the 20's by Friday.
My single comb roosters have a good bit of it. My Black Cochin roo has lost some points and my Blue Cochin cockerel has some issues with his wattles.
That's exactly what it was like!
The back of her comb was just lift it up a tiny bit and I could see blood seeping out of it. It doesn't seem to be a problem there anymore. Now it seems to be the tips of her comb had blood on them even though I blue-coated. I figured they would have left it alone but I think because she seems more tired that she's an easy target.
I never thought about that before, but that actually makes a lot of sense. Also being on carpet allows them to brace themselves where they might not be able to on tile especially if their nails are long.
The back part was actually normal comb color but but bloody, the lighter part towards the bottom was kind of blanched. I don't know if that was because of cold or blood loss. But pretty much her entire comb is covered in blu-kote now so I can't see much of that. Definitely the very back part of her comb has either frostbite or damage from it being bitten. I wasn't sure if it was safe to put any kind of cream on it after it had the cuts on it. Last night when I checked her it seemed like it was just the very tips of her comb that had little spots where they were bleeding. Again not sure if that was because they were being pecked out or if it was just from the severe cold. We're supposed to be above freezing today so hopefully it will take care of that issue. I'll probably keep her in the cage for a couple more days just to keep them off of her.
Yes! I love pea Combs! I've got four of those plus whatever my sebright has, it doesn't quite look the same as the others. But they all look fabulous.
Sebrights have rose combs. I had a few rose combed cockerels last year and they had some trouble with frostbite on the fingers of their combs and their wattles. All my rose combs are gone now though. I like pea combed males. They don't have any projections form their combs and smaller wattles, so they aren't having any issues.

Hey girlMorning guys! Got some catching up to do.
This has been a lousy week. Two days after my car hit the Xmas tree and blew out the rim and tire, my hubby was driving me to work with his truck and he started smelling antifreeze. Then his engine blew on the GSP!! I had to call in and find a sub, my boss was like "You have the worst luck ever." I texted her back "I guess now is a good time to tell you about my family curse" and sent her a picture of my hubby's truck on the back of the tow truck!
Then I found out I may be involved in a lawsuit, which is super-upsetting, and I can't talk about it.
It's been so freezing. Thanks to @Suzi18 for the Cozy Coop suggestion, it's wonderful and my little guys love it...I think it got down to 6 or so here for awhile but it was in the negatives due to the wind chil. Today it's finally supposed to go above freezing (yay!).
The only chicken damage I got is my two Serama boys, Negan and Grumpy, got comb frostbite. Poor Grumpy got it on his wattles and maybe earlobes too (and was bleeding) so I slathered them in Vaseline and put them in the garage coop last night. Everyone else is doing well.
Gonna play catch-up now! Hope everyone is staying warm!
oh. Her comb has a little tiny point at the back but other than that it's pretty flat and close to her head. Big wattles are the worst. Odin kept dipping his into his water dish when he would take a drink. Thankfully everybody else has little dainty wattles.
