Official Squatch Watchers

Hubby suggests a good hot day, pour in the morning keeping birds outside for the day. It takes quick set concrete about 4 hours to set.

Lol by hot he meant a high around 70.
Well that would be after noon in August. I’m still thinking on it.

I know at least 2 Squatchers mentioned Berkey Filters. What can you tell me about them?

I've looked at them an they aren't cheap but I can't stand the calcium in my water. I want one big enough for me and pets to drink from. And to use at least in my coffee pot if not for other cooking.

I was looking at the Big Berkey. Next up is the Royal.

My questions are how often do you have to replace the filters? Do you use just the black filters or do you add the white filters as well? Is it a pain to refill then wait for all the water to be used before filling it again?

Give me pro and cons...

We have a Berkey, and we love it. It does a good job filtering out the iron in our water but NOT the calcium. Our kettle constantly has calcium flakes in it. It may reduce the calcium some, but I'm not sure by what amount. We rinse out the carbon filters when they get clogged, and we don't replace them very often.

Morning folks :frow

So sorry Rae and Cap :hugs

I love mine. I have both set's of filters. Mine are three years old and I need to flush them as the bottom 1/3 seems to be clogged. I refill as I use water.

:: heavy sigh ::

We had the high wind and very wet heavy snow yesterday. Today 25 mph wind and all that wet snow has turned to frozen lumps of what would have been soggy slush. :hmm

My run door on the hoop run got soaked so is swollen and frozen. Yes I managed to get it open tinted the water and feed in there......getting it shut was another challenge.
There was a deadblow hammer involved.

I left the big group in again today. That snow in the run is to much weight for me to shovel it for them.

I plan to make nun farts today. :)

Thanks Rae and RJ. Concerning it doesn’t seem to take the calcium out. That’s my biggest complaint with the water here. I don’t have a water softener but I know my sister who doesn’t live far from me does have one and she still has calcium issues. Still pondering what to do I guess.

@21hens-incharge I had to use a hammer on the frozen ground in front of my coop door more then once. The claw part made a great chisel. I’d get it open far enough to squeeze in and that was it. Luckily once open closing it wasn’t a problem.

Good to know. My other coop only has a 3" clearance. I saw the ice build up there. I decided it wasn't worth it to clear just yet. Maybe it will soften if the sun comes out. ..

I did build the door on the hoop run with a 6" clearance above the ground. I will go out later and use my sawzall to trim the area that is causing issues.
It got wet enough to swell about 1/4 inch on the bottom corner.
I had to grab a pry bar to get in the run and bang on it to shut it.
