Official Squatch Watchers

No, poor thing never even got to lay.:(
Eggs are set, and i've already failed at chicken math.
I set six not four, three Rene a Hobo a Marlene and a Susan.
Overshot my number incase some aren't fertile and for roosters.
My luck they're all healthy unbaked boys.:th
Better to set more.. I set 4 & only ended up w/ 1, the other 3 weren't fertile.

Oh, random but hubs killed my mouse don't know how but he did.
I hate a wireless mouse with a passion so I had to order a wired one.
Couldn't go buy one they're extinct!
Sooo for 5.99 this is going to be my new one.:gigView attachment 1700470
Awesome!!! I had a light up mouse, but I ended up using a wireless one b/c the light was sooooo freakin' bright. I hope yours has the appropriate amount of brightness. I hate wireless mice too & much prefer the wired kind.

We are at 28° wind chill making it feel like 11.
Wind steady at about 30 mph. Gusts up to 90 mph.

Power is intermittent.
Chickens are all ok. Minor snow blown into cochin house. I did get 3 whole eggs and one broken.

Ok that's my update.

I love that mouse Chicky!!
I saw something on the news about the bomb cyclone storm. I hope you're not getting any of that craziness. Stay warm!

So the coop went up in a hurry as you all know. The back 6' is dirt. Not wanting anything to dig in and not wanting the birds to dig in the dirt I covered it with solid top pallets.

Yes dirt floor in the coop where they roost would be lovely. Except this was a garage at some point. I have no idea what's in the dirt. Besides the asphalt paper, plastic bag pieces and rusted metal I found. So I didn't want them digging in it.

Well the pallets were free and heavy as all get out but not the same size and didn't quite fill the space. So the 2' x 6' section right down the middle was open. I had some scrap plywood that I set down to bridge the gap and ta da a floor.

I just happened upon another little solid top pallet while at work. Ran off with it right away hoping it would fit that gap. I go out to the coop and pick up the plywood.

:eek::barnie:he:th:sick
It's all taterin moldy!!!!!

Good grief. I drag it outside. Clean out the shavings that snuck under it and then go to look under one of the other pallets. The smaller of the two is still beyond heavy but I manage to pick it up.View attachment 1700546
Not black or green and almost like spider silk. So I clean that one up, get all the shavings out from between the boards, clean under it too, and put it back.

And as luck would have it...

My newly acquired pallet it not long enough but the exact width I need!

I didn't recover the pallets with shavings. Going to get some PDZ to put under there.

Looking for another little pallet to finish off that section.

Any other thoughts on what I can do? Other thoughts for how to cover that dirt section? Pavers were an idea... I like the raised floor of the pallets but good God I can't have the whole place mold.
For those pieces on the sides you could temporarily get some wood to fit in there so stuff doesn't fall in. If it's the width of a 2x4, you could just get a 1x6 and screw it into the top of the pallets.
I like the idea of getting the quick concrete. If we get another heat wave where it's in the 90's you could get it done. I wouldn't have a real chicken walk on the concrete either.. I'd just use a stamp attached to a stick & you could press in lighter than they'd walk so it wouldn't be so deep. They do that at the zoo... there's areas where they stamped prints of different animals in the paths.

I could not believe it! That's only 5 months... maybe even a little less.
Until you get something more permanent you could take the pallets out periodically and spray them w/ bleach and let them dry completely before putting them back. Is there any mold on the dirt?

Sorry Rae, that is always miserable. I lost a whole litter of bunnies yesterday. 5 of them. Idk why.
:hugs:hit

March 30th is tempting! My babies hatch for pickup April 22nd. I could have a whole flock of little fuzz butts running around! :jumpy:jumpy:jumpy

My broody queen was thinking about it too. So I don't think will a have a hard time convincing her. :yesss: Hopefully she accepts day old hatchlings.

I did snag another little pallet today so I can finish off that bit of floor. What type of vapor barrier? I'm afraid I'd trap moisture on top of it....

Update on Princess Frannie

Standing neck in normal position. See how it almost folded in half? The lower part is healed but I think to was scraped upward to make that ball.View attachment 1700707Better view of wound. She's now Princess Frannie cause you'd think it was the end of the world, me trying to get a dang picture of her neck!
It looks like it's getting better. Too bad that bit didn't heal back together.

The nurse was encouraging me to fart today, and I did. Does that count?
:lau

Dang. I had a colonoscopy today. Had to fart out the air they pump into you. Good report, recheck in 5 years. :yesss:
Great news!

Great news!

We got hit by the storm. Super wet heavy snow and very high winds. We all made it through of course.
I think I will have to let the big group of birds into their run tomorrow. They are ok in the coop but getting grumpy.

It causes a lot of power outages too!

:: heavy sigh ::

We had the high wind and very wet heavy snow yesterday. Today 25 mph wind and all that wet snow has turned to frozen lumps of what would have been soggy slush. :hmm

My run door on the hoop run got soaked so is swollen and frozen. Yes I managed to get it open tinted the water and feed in there......getting it shut was another challenge.
There was a deadblow hammer involved.

I left the big group in again today. That snow in the run is to much weight for me to shovel it for them.

I plan to make nun farts today. :)
I hope the cleanup goes well!

Glad you made it through. Of course the news shows the most dramatic scenes of it. Hopefully you get some dry days so you don't end up w/ a mud pit til summer.

Hugs for those who need it....(stupid quotes not working today):hugs

I have a pick out by the main coop because of the ice :rant
Ice is gone and top 1" is mud them frozen mud, monsoon has hit here. Under a wind warning, but my "hole" is not too windy...yet

I processed a couple of cockerels and one had 3 testicles
gory pics... if you not into that, don't look
