Official Squatch Watchers

Here at the University, our Building is open from 8-5. The rest of the time it is a private and locked building. Since it is not open to the public, Under grad students are not supposed to be in the building. One Program here keeps scheduling classes that run past 5. That is bad enough since the building is locked after 5, but the Instructors want to schedule office hours after 5 too. To get the students in, the locked door has to be propped open. This creates a safety and a theft hazard.

The person that schedules these classes was defending this at a meeting last week. He did not understand any of this! On top of all of the normal reasons, we are also under increased danger here because of some death threats against a professor and also to us as Staff. We had to meed with UC police about it two weeks ago.

A lot of People are very self centered it seems

Ha yes that happened a lot... people and doors propped open.
Instructors are supposed to let campus police know if they are there on off hours. We have had scheduled repairs going on holidays so the staff isn't there. Sure enough several instructor show up. Sometimes they bring their little kids running amuck when we have torches going, running high lifts, forklifts or the water shut down. Not safe.

They have the electronic doors now that send an alert to campus police if the door is opened after hours. But they just figure it's a maintenance or custodial worker during the week. And they probably are right most of the time. Custodians don't have a key to get back in from taking garbage out, and us maintenance have our hands full of tools.

I loved it when Campus police dispatch would call me out in the middle of Saturday/Sunday/holiday Night and the new officer on patrol would stop me telling me Campus was closed and how did I get through a locked gate.. I would laugh and tell them to ask dispatch as to why I was there and I had a key to the gate... Some of the guys would swear at the officers, mainly because dispatch should tell the officers what was going on and they are supposed to have the gates open for us....and who wants to be woken up come out and get hassled by the cops

It would be nice to have sensors on doors here!

We are like the poor relations of the University here. Humanities and etc.

So very true!

I am moving the fence to make life easier for the meter readers. Apparently mine is getting moisture inside causing issues. They were supposed to replace the upper portion and cover 4 months ago to stop the issue.

Moving my fence isn't hard and will give them a 3'x3' space.......it may be tight but should work.

They spend like a million $ on cameras and keyless swipe card door locks with sensors... of course none of these things have worked right from day one.... and if they are working right someone lets a balloon loose in the concourse that in the middle of the night loses enough air that it gets low enough it sets off the motion detectors every time the air handler kicks on and blows it around. :rant
They have a whole bank of monitors that the dispatch CP person is supposed to watch, and answer the phones, radio, people asking for help at the desk, monitor the HVAC alarms, fire alarms and the sensors. One person..2 if someone is in training.... and they wonder why they have a high turnover rate.

most of the companies require 3' clearance so that should be great :ya

The electric company had to change to remote meters and a cedar type bush had grown in front of it. Fortunately they didn't have that type of meter with, and they said they could stand on the adjacent steps and get it....but before they came back I whacked it back. I had been keeping it below the meter so it could be read.

The gas company is putting remote reader on out here... but the screw head broke off on mine and the next 2 houses up. They don't know when someone will be back... mind you these meters were put in about 1940 or earlier

Here they changed the meters on both the gas and electric service. The gas required a new valve too. PGE spent millions on it!

I will have to keep an eye on a wigelia bush to make sure it stays out of the way.
My blackberry bushes grow over the gas meter every summer.
:barnie
I may see if I can dig them out this spring and move them. I know it is a pain to try and read that meter so I do clip them every week in the growing season. At least they are thornless.
