I put a tarp over my hardwood coop floor. Stapled down around the edges. Needs to be replaced periodically when it gets holes in it. It works nicely and I can easily scrape up the gross patches where water mixes w/ the poop.

Might be worth it to put in an egg trap so the eggs roll out after they're laid if you're worried enough about it.

Have you tried a fecal float. After Ron suggested it a couple weeks ago b/c I'd had some soft shell eggs I just gave my girls corid & since then the dirty butt puff no longer has a dirty butt and it seems like my weird eggs are becoming more normal. I've been giving them 1/2 tsp / gal since I got back and it looks like things are improving. Probably would stop needing it if they'd quit knocking all of their food out onto the floor.

Glad you made it home safe. Hope you had a good trip.

I took a sample to the vet a little while ago. Waiting on results.
Her cleaning and exam showed no stuck egg but she felt oddly hard in the abdomen.
I am 98% sure it's internal laying.

I'm sorry. That how I lost my very first girl. It was not the chicken lesson I wanted to learn.

This is my second having this issue. My first one was a Delaware named Charger. She has been gone many years now. :(

I took some cool mash out to May. She ate some. Not enough but at least she stood up to eat and took a few steps to get to it.
It sux tater because I can see she wants to live.

I had decided to try and drain her belly. She had gotten water belly from the internal laying. I could drain it easy enough but it refilled so fast I thought it was better to put her down.

That's what I am afraid of. If I try to drain her am I just prolonging the inevitable.
Today it is clear she is hurting more. :(

Quality of life and all that. :hit

I told myself if I could drain it 2 maybe 3 times a year and give her quality life I would do it. It didn't take a month and she was filled again.

:hitright with you:hugs
