Official Squatch Watchers

The trip was OK, but if they were valuable chicks I would do Express. They were loud & hungry. One did not make it. Ordered 26, just counted again, 25 chicks. So they did not send an extra one. The P.O. clerk thought that they were OK because they were making so much noise, but they were screaming for food and water!

Well poop. I had thought they were 100% alive. :hugs

I am glad you got them quick enough that nearly all made it.

Which hatchery did you use? Cackle did a great job getting my ducks to me in good shape.

The hatchery did great. They sent them in a double box that should hold 50. They put gel in there which was all eaten. Ideal in TX. The Post Office parked them or sent them on a truck from the tracking. There was about a day of no movement. Somewhere before the Phoenix airport check-in. Probably If they were Express, that day would have been spent on a plane.

I honestly don't know if express makes a difference at all.
My tracking had them stationary for 48+ hours when actually they were in transit. I only knew they were here because hubs knows a guy that works at the post office and called him to check. The theory is someone missed a scanning.

I know, sometimes they take our $ for nothin!

It said right on the packing list, "Call on Arrival" I guess I should be OK with only one DOA. A couple of poopy butts so far, not sticking because I am wiping their darn butts with Q-tips! (Not to mention the litle white rock picking at the poopy-butt bird's butt to alert me to that issue)! Birds will be birds from Day One:idunno

The lack of scanning is an every day problem.

I order a lot live bugs and of have noticed that my Post Office doesn't call until mid-to-late afternoon. (Once things slow down I assume?) So if I have chicks coming I just start showing up every morning when they open.

I know right! They never called me. Hubs got a call 2 hours after I had picked them up. His number wasn't even the first number on the box.

A little coconut oil or vasaline will help keep it from sticking. ;)
Several years ago the hatchery sent a box 2 weeks before expected to a farm store I had a request in to. They called me and said if I wanted any of the buff polish I should come right away. Poor babies were in transit 4 days in freezing cold. Only 6 out of 50 made it alive. I battled pasty butt for almost a month with them. Coconut oil likely saved their little lives.

Coconut oil is awesome! Little Gretel was getting coconut oil in both ends for days to battle her constipation issues. Worked like a charm though!
