Good morning all
Hi folks,
Well, we’ve had an interesting week. DH started a program for free college through a partnership with our church governing body. His desktop died a few weeks ago and he’s been using an old laptop his grandmother gave us since she can’t really see anymore. Between our slow internet and the laptop being old he’s been having trouble downloading all the software he needed for school. We setup his phone to be a hotspot and decided he would do school work on the drive to the Airbnb we stay at while visiting his grandmother.
All the Keets finished hatching before we left on Friday. On the drive to PA, we heard that two boys from our church were being taken from their parents by CPS. Since then we’ve been wrestling with if we should take them in or not. Also on the drive, the old laptop suddenly died. So after we got to the Airbnb and ate dinner, I went to target and bought a $270 laptop for DH to do schoolwork since, even once he repaired his desktop he would still need to download all the school stuff on a crappy connection and he was almost 2 weeks behind at this point. That did the trick and he used the faster internet at the Airbnb to get set up and caught up on school work. Thank goodness he decided to only take one class to get his feet wet. We had a good visit with DH’s grandmother and got back fine.
We were in contact with the case worker and he came yesterday to have us fill out some forms. We still have a few more questions about deal breakers we have for fostering the kids and one more interview but we could have one or both the kids here as early as tonight.
Yesterday, we also got 43 chicks in the mail. 30 Cornish Cross (plus one), 10 leghorn pullets (plus one), and a free rare chick. I think it looks like a gold laced Wyandotte. While I was setting them up, I found 3 of the Keets had died. This morning, the chicks are all doing great, I checked on the Keets and most of them were dead. Three still look pretty chipper, two are very weak and floppy (I moved them back into the incubator which we cleaned out yesterday) and one died while we were moving things around. All the dead and sick ones are skin and bones. The lively ones aren’t much better. I’m wondering if they have some sort of genetic issue that is causing failure to thrive after a little over a week alive. Poor little things. I don’t have high hopes for the remaining five. I’m thinking I’ll have to repopulate next year from a different hatchery.
Glad your things are latching on to the boys in need. So nice for you to do this. We’ll we are down to 2 Keets and up to 5 boys. The two foster kids were dropped off before dinner. They are brothers. They are 1.5 years and 3 months older than Thing 1. The older boys are really excited. It was hard to get them in bed. Thing 1 has latched onto the older boy and Thing 2 has latched onto the younger one. The younger boy has some health issues which cause him at 6 to be more on a level with thing 2 who is 3. We have the foster kids on a queen sized mattress in our guest room at the moment. We’ll need to upgrade them to bunk beds. We aren’t 100% sure they will be staying for a long while yet, but we’ll see. All three older boys are wearing pretty much the same sized clothes. So far, the evening went much better than when expected it to go.
Glad your things are latching on to the boys in need. So nice for you to do this.
Prayers for smooth sailing.
DH and I talked about fostering before we even got married. We were thinking about entering the system when our bio kids were older, but these are kids we know through church and their mother was fine with us taking them. They also had to separate the boys. So for a situation like this where they have a chance to be placed with someone they know, the system can move very quickly to get a family certified. We still have to do a home study to make everything official. We’ll probably have to take classes after the fact as well.Hi everybody
@Redhead Rae - Were you interested in fostering all along and had met the requirements already or is the process to be a foster just that quick?
