Setting the week of August 22 (or so... ) Everyone join!! You know you want to!

How do you KNOW, for sure, that it's time to give up on and remove an egg. I understand if they smell, ooze, or have a blood ring. Comparing my eggs I have definate keepers - two are super wiggly and one that I've not witnessed any moving inside but otherwise is growing darker and veiny like the other two. My most active one has a fully detached air sac

hoping for the best & hatching all upright. Also read to stop turning detached air sac eggs on day 16...? Anyway, my other eggs I'm having a hard time removing. Basically they look clear except a dark shadow inside - is it just the yolk getting darker? One had what looked like a dark thick vein about a quarter of an inch long for several days but the red line is now detached from the shell and really dark. Assuming that's a quitter. Sorry to be so lengthy, I'm really afraid of tossing out a viable egg so I'm trying to describe what I see. All are brown eggs & kind of hard to see through. Oh - I'm on day 14.

The ones I have gotten rid of had veining at one time but quit and the veins disappear. They were too clear for my day 14.

The ones I'm holding onto I've never seen veins (except the one I mentioned that has now fallen away from the shell). I've never candled or incubated before so my fear is this: the three eggs that I see positive growth in are all from very light brown faverolle eggs. All the other eggs are slightly darker or spotted. I may not be seeing through them as well and missing veins...is that possible? They aren't dark eggs - they're australorp, sussex, and ameraucana/ee. I bought a light that seems super bright.

THIS is only my second hatch but I have been keeping mine till they start to smell that way I don't accidentally throw out a good egg.and hoops thing I didn't throw out all my suspects last time because all but two of my eggs hatched.

To update, my blackout eggs are still wigglers, so that's encouraging! Lockdown is due on Sunday morning. I'm wondering whether to delay it 12-24 hours. Thoughts?

Sounds like a safe plan - I like it. On your last hatch, the suspect ones that hatched, why did you think they were bad? Could you see veins and growth? Just curious how they compare to what I have.

I'm too new to this the give advice but great news about the wigglers! I'd probably proceed with lockdown as planned...but I have zero experience! I'm sure one of the others will have actual reasons as to why or why not to adjust your lockdown schedule.

Some of the eggs were so dark and spotty I couldn't see much of anything also a couple had what appeard to be blood rings and both hatched out fine. My decision to keep them was based more on the fact it was my first hatch I really had no idea what to expect and it wasn't hard to find the stinkers, so I left them to see what would happen.

Good luck with your quail hatch Chucklecluck. Mine go into lockdown Monday. I'm keeping the questionable ones in - just in case! I know what you mean about thinking one had a blood ring. One of mine I was 99% sure was a blood ring - it definitely was not. So glad I kept it in.
